The Geodesic Cowl is an intermediate-level knit cowl inspired by a geodesic sphere, designed to keep you warm while celebrating geometric design. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Emily O'Brien offers two finished sizes: a short cowl measuring 13" x 6.5" and a long cowl measuring 23" x 11.5". The design brings architectural inspiration to wearable knitwear, combining mathematical precision with practical warmth.

Construction Technique

This cowl is constructed using a modular knitting approach, where the garment is built from individual isosceles triangles that are knit separately and then assembled. Each triangle module is designed to measure 3" along its sides when lying flat. This modular technique allows knitters to create complex geometric patterns while working manageable, repeatable units rather than complex stitch patterns across the entire piece.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The pattern employs garter stitch as the primary stitch structure, which creates a textured, reversible fabric. The gauge is 22 stitches over 4 inches in garter stitch. A key specialty stitch used in this pattern is the center double decrease (cdd), which is executed by slipping two stitches together as if to knit two together, knitting the next stitch on the left needle, then inserting the left needle into the slipped stitches and pulling them over the stitch you just knit. This decrease is essential for shaping the triangular modules and creating the geometric definition of the design.

Yarn and Materials

The Geodesic Cowl is designed for DK weight or sport weight yarn. The short size requires 335 yards (305 meters) of yarn, while the long size requires 775 yards (709 meters). The pattern sample photographed uses Malabrigo Arroyo, a popular DK weight option. Knitters will need US 5 (3.5mm) double-pointed needles (DPNs) or the same size needles for Magic Loop knitting, along with a US 5 16" circular needle for the short size or 37" circular needle for the long size. Additional notions include a darning needle for weaving in ends and stitch markers if using the Magic Loop method.
