What Is Being Made

Gentle Blooms is a bandana-style cowlette designed by Jo Shaw for hardybarn designs. This project combines the aesthetic appeal and design complexity of a shawl with the practical wearability of a cowl. The bandana-style construction means the finished piece is smaller and more compact than a traditional shawl, making it easier to wear while maintaining the beautiful stitch patterns and visual interest that shawl knitting offers. This design is ideal for knitters who want to showcase special yarn without committing to a large project, and it works particularly well for using up precious leftover skeins from larger projects.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for 4ply (fingering weight) yarn. The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using two different yarns, both featuring the same fiber content and yardage specifications:

• Main Colour (MC): Skein Queen Selkino, 100g with 400m (438 yards), composed of 70% merino wool and 30% silk in the Ink colourway
• Contrast Colour 1 (CC1): The Wool Barn Merino & Silk, 100g with 400m (438 yards), also 70% merino wool and 30% silk

The merino wool and silk blend creates a yarn with excellent drape and a subtle sheen, making it particularly suitable for displaying stitch definition in colorwork patterns. Standard knitting needles appropriate for 4ply yarn weight are required.
