Product Description

Neutral or bright?….there is room to explore colours with this design. This pattern is knitted in the round with a delicate texture for your wardrobe and makes a quick knit as the gifting season fast approaches. This is a simple, yet effective pattern, the cowl is easily lengthened if desired. I would class this knit as suitable for the Advanced beginner. Have some fun playing with colours. The light coloured yarn is a beautiful hand dyed yarn (colour Extra! Extra!) available from ‘The Australian Wool Store’. The darker yarn is the result of over dying a yarn.

YARN alternative: West Yorkshire Spinners Bo Peep Pure (colours Mist 166 MC and Blackcurrant 319 CC)

Geilo Cowl and Hat by OGE Knitwear Designs

Project Overview

The Geilo Cowl and Hat is a coordinating two-piece knitting set designed by OGE Knitwear Designs. This intermediate-level knitting project allows crafters to create a matching cowl and hat using the same stitch pattern and color techniques. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and offers three size options to accommodate different preferences and head sizes.

What Is Being Made

This pattern includes instructions for two complementary accessories:

  • Cowl: A neck warmer featuring a relaxed, comfortable fit available in three circumference sizes
  • Hat: A coordinating head covering that pairs with the cowl to create a unified accessory set

Size Options

Both the cowl and hat are offered in three distinct sizes to suit various wearers:

  • Size A (Small): Cowl circumference of 58 cm (23 inches) and length of 18.5 cm (7½ inches)
  • Size B (Medium): Cowl circumference of 63.5 cm (25 inches) and length of 21 cm (8½ inches)
  • Size C (Adult): Cowl circumference of 69 cm (27 inches) and length of 27.5 cm (11 inches)

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Geilo pattern employs a two-color knitting technique using a main color and contrast color throughout the design. The stitch pattern creates a cohesive fabric worked at a specific tension to ensure proper fit and drape. The pattern utilizes standard knitting abbreviations, including decreases (abbreviated as "dec"), which are incorporated into the shaping of both the cowl and hat pieces.

Needles Required

This pattern calls for two types of needles to accommodate the different construction methods:

  • 4 mm (US 6 : UK 8) circular needles measuring 40 cm (16 inches) for working the cowl in the round
  • 4 mm (US 6 : UK 8) double-pointed needles for constructing the hat, allowing for seamless circular knitting and decreases at the crown

Yarn Requirements and Materials

The Geilo pattern is designed for DK weight yarn (also known as 8 ply or Light Worsted weight). The yarn is worked at a tension of 22 stitches and 26 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) when knitted with 4 mm needles in the stitch pattern.

Yarn yardage requirements vary by size and are divided between main color and contrast color:

Size A Yarn Requirements

  • Main Colour (MC): 45 g; 90 m; 110 yd
  • Contrast Colour (CC): 40 g; 80 m; 100 yd

Size B Yarn Requirements

  • Main Colour (MC): 55 g; 110 m; 135 yd
  • Contrast Colour (CC): 50 g; 100 m; 125 yd

Size C Yarn Requirements

  • Main Colour (MC): 80 g; 160 m; 195 yd
  • Contrast Colour (CC): 70 g; 140 m; 170 yd

The pattern specifies DK/Light Worsted weight yarn with a standard yardage of approximately 200 meters (246 yards) per 100 gram hank, allowing knitters to select from a wide variety of yarn brands and fiber contents that meet these specifications.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate project, the Geilo Cowl and Hat is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable working with circular and double-pointed needles, managing two colors in a stitch pattern, and executing decreases for shaping.
