Product Description

Furballs' Simple Eyes 3 (short scarf version) is a 19" x 6 1/2" / 48.3 cm x 16.5 cm oval shaped short scarf using simple garter and broken rib stitches. The highly decorative border is more than pretty look, it is also the "button" of the scarf for securing. The short scarf is good for all season: air conditioning room in the summer, cool early morning and evening working in the garden, and cold winter night watching TV. It is small and compact enough to find space in a handbag, a corner of the bottom drawer of office desk or the glove compartment of a car.

Suitable for advance beginner and above.

The project will take about five (5) hours to complete.

Furballs' Simple Eyes 3 Short Scarf

What Is Being Made

This is a short scarf designed by Tomato68Evony, created using fundamental knitting techniques. The finished scarf measures 19 inches long by 6.5 inches wide (48.3 cm x 16.5 cm) before blocking, making it an ideal accessory for layering or a lightweight neck wrap. The pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, suitable for knitters with basic skills who are ready to expand their technical repertoire.

Techniques Used

This knitting pattern employs several core techniques to create visual interest and structure:

  • Garter stitch forms the foundation of the fabric, creating a textured, reversible surface that lies flat and provides stability
  • Increases using both knit front and back (kfb) and purl front and back (pfb) methods to shape the scarf
  • Decreases using pass slipped stitch over (psso) and pass previous stitch over (ppso) techniques to refine edges and shaping
  • Marker placement to track pattern repeats and stitch sections throughout the project
  • Slip stitch techniques for edge definition and seamless transitions between sections
  • Make one stitch (m1p) increases for strategic shaping

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches including knit (k), purl (p), and combinations thereof. Stitch manipulation techniques include knit front and back (kfb) and purl front and back (pfb) for increases, along with slip one purlwise (sl1) and decrease methods such as psso and ppso. These stitches work together to create the scarf's dimensional structure.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: Worsted weight acrylic yarn, requiring 1.5 ounces (46.2 grams) or approximately 77 yards (70.4 meters) for the complete short scarf version. Worsted weight provides excellent drape and durability for everyday wear.

Needles: The pattern requires two needle sizes—US 4 (3.50 mm) circular or double-pointed needles for the main fabric, and US 3 (3.00 mm) straight, circular, or double-pointed needles for finishing details. Having both sizes allows for gauge control and refined edge work.

Additional Supplies: Two stitch markers (or equivalent alternatives), scissors, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and finishing.

Gauge and Customization

The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches by 44 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch when measured before blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for accurate finished dimensions. The pattern documentation indicates four different methods for scaling up the piece, allowing knitters to customize the scarf length to suit personal preferences or specific fit requirements without requiring extensive pattern modifications.
