Fuaruisce Crochet Jacket by Caroline Murphy

What is Being Made

Fuaruisce is a downloadable crochet jacket pattern designed by Caroline Murphy. This intermediate-level garment is constructed using modular square motifs worked in assorted colours, creating a striking patchwork effect. The finished jacket measures 119.25cm (47 inches) around the bust with a length of 48.25cm (19 inches) from shoulder to hem, and features sleeves that measure 50.75cm (20 inches) from underarm to cuff.

Construction Technique

The jacket is built using a modular construction method, where individual squares (Square A) are crocheted separately and then joined together to form the garment pieces. This technique allows crafters to work with multiple yarn colours in assorted shades, building the design incrementally. The modular approach is particularly suited to creating colourwork effects and provides flexibility in garment assembly, as squares can be arranged and joined in various configurations before being sewn or crocheted together.

Crochet Stitches and Abbreviations Used

  • Chain (ch): The foundation stitch used to begin rounds and create chain spaces
  • Double crochet (dc): The primary stitch used throughout the square motifs for structure and density
  • Single crochet (sc): Used for shaping and finishing details
  • Slip stitch (ss): Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between stitches
  • Chain space (ch-sp): Openwork areas created by chains, adding texture and visual interest

Pattern Structure

Square A, the primary motif, begins with a magic ring or chain foundation. Round 1 establishes 12 double crochets worked into the circle. Round 2 doubles the stitch count to 24 by working 2 double crochets into each stitch of the previous round. Round 3 continues the expansion pattern. Contrast yarn is introduced in Rounds 2 and 3, allowing for colour variation and creating the multi-coloured aesthetic. The pattern uses American crochet terminology throughout.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The jacket requires approximately 1,350 metres (1,477 yards) of DK weight yarn in total. The yarn is worked in assorted colours, meaning crafters can use a variety of different shades and hues to create the colourwork effect. DK (double knit) weight yarn is a medium-weight option that produces a fabric with good drape and structure suitable for garment construction.

Tools and Tension

The pattern calls for a 5mm crochet hook as the primary tool for constructing the main fabric, with a 4mm crochet hook reserved for working edgings and finishing details. The required tension is 16 stitches and 7 rows over a 10cm (4 inch) square when working with the 5mm hook. Achieving correct tension is essential for the jacket to fit to the stated measurements and drape properly.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes the crafter has foundational crochet knowledge including familiarity with basic stitches, working in the round, and colour changes. The modular construction method and multi-colour work add complexity beyond beginner level, making this an ideal project for those looking to develop their skills in motif-based garment construction.
