Product Description
I designed these socks when I got my first month of mystery yarn from The Farmer’s Daughter Fibers Sock Squad. It looked wintery and icy, so these socks were born.
This is a top down sock with a traditional heel flap. It is worked using magic loop; needle 1 will be the front of the foot/leg and needle 2 will be the back of the foot/leg and heel. I’ve used a contrast color for the cuff and toe, but this sock would look just as good in a single color, so feel free to omit if you want. If you have a wider calf, moving up a needle size for the cast on and first 2-3” of the leg may help the socks to stay up on your leg.
Frozen Lake Socks by Shannon Larson
Project Overview
Frozen Lake Socks is a beginner-friendly knitted sock pattern designed by Shannon Larson of Justlivin Designs. This top-down sock design features a traditional heel flap construction and is worked using the magic loop technique on circular needles. The pattern incorporates optional contrast color work in the cuff and toe, inspired by the wintery appearance of mystery yarn from The Farmer's Daughter Fibers Sock Squad January collection.
Construction Method and Techniques
These socks are constructed from the top down, meaning knitting begins at the cuff and progresses toward the toe. The magic loop method is employed for working small circumference knitting on a single long circular needle, which eliminates the need for double-pointed needles. The pattern divides the work into two logical sections: needle 1 works the front of the foot and leg, while needle 2 works the back of the foot and heel. A traditional heel flap is incorporated, which provides structure and durability at the heel where socks experience the most wear.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
While specific stitch patterns are not detailed in the available pattern excerpt, the design utilizes fundamental sock knitting stitches appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The optional contrast color work in the cuff and toe sections adds visual interest through color changes rather than complex stitch manipulation.
Materials and Gauge
- Yarn: Fingering weight yarn in two colors—100g main color (MC) and 20g contrast color (CC), though the sample uses 50g MC and 15g CC. Fingering weight yarn is the traditional choice for sock knitting, providing the appropriate thickness and elasticity for comfortable, durable socks.
- Needles: US #1/2.25mm circular needle, 32 inches or longer, sized as needed to obtain proper gauge. A cable needle is also required for any cable work in the pattern.
- Additional Tools: Darning needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers including at least one locking stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and construction sections.
- Gauge: Pattern includes specific gauge requirements to ensure proper fit; adjustments such as moving up a needle size are recommended for those with wider calves.
Design Flexibility
The pattern accommodates customization for different body types and aesthetic preferences. The contrast color cuff and toe are optional elements; knitters may omit them to create a single-color version. The pattern also includes guidance for adjusting needle size to accommodate different calf widths, making these socks adaptable to various wearers.
