Frippery Cuffs by Sarah Jane Designs
What is Being Made
The Frippery Cuffs are a pair of decorative wrist cuffs designed to add feminine detail to any outfit. These crocheted accessories feature a combination of textured and delicate elements, measuring 5 inches in length and available in five sizes to fit wrist circumferences ranging from 5½ inches (extra small) to 7½ inches (extra large). The cuffs are embellished with a ½" button-attached flower, making them a charming accessory piece suitable for various occasions.
Crochet Techniques Used
This intermediate-level crochet project employs several key techniques to create visual interest and texture. The primary construction method uses front post double crochet stitches to build a textured fabric base that provides structure and dimension to the cuffs. The pattern combines this textured element with lace weight yarn sections, creating a contrast between the more substantial DK weight fabric and delicate, airy lace components. This combination of techniques allows crafters to develop skills in working with different yarn weights and understanding how stitch placement affects the final appearance of a garment.
Stitches Used
- Chain – Used for foundation and shaping
- Single crochet – Provides a tight, dense fabric
- Double crochet – Creates a taller stitch for drape and coverage
- Foundation double crochet – Allows for a more flexible starting edge
- Front post double crochet – The primary stitch used for the main fabric, creating raised texture and visual interest
- Slip stitch – Used for joining and finishing
Materials Required
The Frippery Cuffs pattern calls for a combination of yarn weights to achieve the desired effect. You will need 75–100 yards of DK weight yarn and 180–200 yards of lace weight yarn. The pattern suggests Moda Vera Bouvardia light worsted weight yarn and Colourmart Extra Fine Merino Lace weight yarn, though any DK/light worsted and lace weight yarn that allows you to achieve the specified gauge is suitable.
For tools, use a 4.00mm (UK 8, US G/6) crochet hook, or whichever size is necessary to achieve correct tension with your chosen yarn. A yarn needle is required for sewing in ends and finishing, and a ½" button is needed to attach the decorative flower embellishment.
Gauge and Tension
Achieving the correct gauge is essential for this project. The pattern specifies 14 stitches and 10 rows to 4 inches over front post double crochet fabric when using a 4.00mm hook and DK weight yarn. The gauge for the lace weight yarn is noted as not critical for this pattern, allowing for more flexibility when working with the delicate lace sections.
