What Is Being Made
Frankie's Pocket Hat is a versatile knit hat featuring a functional pocket detail, designed by JaneTerzzaDesigns. This downloadable knitting pattern offers six size options, ranging from tiny baby to adult circumferences of 11 inches (28 cm) up to 20 inches (51 cm). The hat's signature feature is a built-in pocket suitable for storing small items such as teddy bears, credit cards, iPods, phones, or other small objects. The designer specializes in one-piece knitting with minimal seaming, making this an efficient and practical construction method.
Knitting Techniques
Frankie's Pocket Hat offers flexibility in construction methods to suit different knitter preferences and available tools. The pattern provides three distinct options for completing the project:
- In the Round: Knitted seamlessly on circular needles using the magic loop technique, creating a continuous spiral without seaming
- Totally Seamless: An alternative in-the-round method for complete seamless construction
- Knit Flat: A traditional flat knitting option for knitters who prefer working back and forth on straight needles
The pattern begins with casting on between 60 and 110 stitches depending on the chosen size, followed by initial rows before progressing to the main pattern instructions. This beginner-friendly design minimizes complex shaping while maintaining functional construction.
Stitches Used
Frankie's Pocket Hat utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for beginner-level knitters:
- Knit (k): The primary stitch creating the fabric structure
- Purl (p): Used for texture variation and pattern definition
The combination of knit and purl stitches creates the hat's texture and visual interest while remaining accessible to knitters developing their foundational skills.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern requires 50 grams of double knit (DK) weight yarn in the main color, plus an additional 50 grams of double knit yarn in a contrasting color for visual contrast and design definition.
Needles: For in-the-round construction, 4mm circular needles long enough for magic loop knitting are required. Alternatively, 4mm straight needles are suitable for the flat knitting option.
Tension: The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches to 4 inches (10 centimeters) horizontally and 28 rows to 4 inches (10 centimeters) vertically when worked in double knit yarn on 4mm needles. Achieving correct tension ensures the hat fits properly across all six size options.
Design Notes
Frankie's Pocket Hat demonstrates thoughtful design for practical everyday use. The pocket feature adds functional appeal beyond traditional hat construction. For tiny baby sizes, the designer recommends securely attaching any items placed in the pocket for safety reasons. The six-size range makes this pattern suitable for gift-giving across age groups, from newborns to adults, with each size carefully proportioned for proper fit.
