Product Description
A very handsome fox like the ones I see in my garden. The first three rows of the face are a little bit awkward because of the colour changing in the round but I like to make my creatures as realisitic as possible and from there on the pattern is quite straightforward.
Fox Finger Puppet by Rymell
What is Being Made
This is a charming finger puppet designed in the shape of a fox, created using crochet techniques. The finished piece is small enough to wear on a finger, making it an ideal toy or decorative accessory. The fox features a distinctive two-tone color scheme with white and red sections that form the head and facial features characteristic of a fox.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. The pattern is worked in the round, building the three-dimensional head structure from a central ring. The design demonstrates intermediate-level crochet skills, requiring the crocheter to manage color changes, work increases strategically, and execute techniques like working into the front loop only (FLO) to create specific shaping.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs double crochet (dc) stitches throughout the construction. Key stitch techniques include:
- Double crochet increases: Created by working 2 double crochets into a single stitch to expand the fabric
- Front loop only (FLO) stitches: Used in later rounds to create textural variation and shaping, particularly visible in rounds 7 and beyond
- Color changes: Executed by pulling the final loop through in the new color during the last stage of the current stitch, allowing seamless transitions between the white and red sections
Color Work and Construction Details
The fox puppet features a sophisticated two-color intarsia technique using white and red yarn. Rather than carrying yarn loosely across the back, the pattern instructs the crocheter to catch loose yarn every 2 or 3 stitches by laying it across the back of the stitch being worked. This method keeps the inside of the puppet neat and prevents long floats. The color pattern creates the fox's distinctive markings, with white forming the base and red sections adding facial character.
The pattern progresses through seven rounds (with additional rounds continuing beyond the provided excerpt), beginning with 8 stitches in the initial round and increasing to 20 stitches by round 6. This gradual increase creates the rounded, dimensional head shape essential to a three-dimensional finger puppet.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This project uses DK weight yarn in white and red, paired with an appropriately sized crochet hook for the yarn weight. DK yarn is a medium-light weight that allows for detailed stitch definition while remaining quick to work. The smaller gauge created by DK yarn is ideal for a finger puppet, ensuring the finished piece is appropriately sized and maintains crisp stitch definition for the fox's features.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes the crocheter is comfortable with basic crochet techniques and ready to tackle color changes, strategic increases, and working in the round. The color management and the need to track stitch counts across multiple rounds make this more challenging than a beginner project, though it remains accessible to those with foundational crochet experience.
Note: This pattern uses UK stitch names, so crocheters should ensure they are familiar with UK terminology where double crochet (UK) differs from US single crochet.
