Fofo Crescent Shawl by Seni Designs

What is Being Made

Fofo is an elegant crescent-shaped shawl designed by Inês Sousa and created by Seni Designs. This intermediate-level knitting project measures 140 x 35 cm (55.9 x 15.7 inches) and is worked from the top down, making it an accessible yet sophisticated addition to any knitter's collection. The shawl's distinctive crescent silhouette combined with its decorative edging makes it suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

Fofo employs a top-down construction method, which allows knitters to try on the garment as they work and easily customize the final size. The shawl features a thoughtfully designed structure with distinct pattern sections that create visual interest and movement throughout the piece.

The pattern is easily customizable by adjusting the number of pattern repeats in the main body, allowing knitters to create variations in size and drape without requiring a completely new pattern. This flexibility makes Fofo an excellent choice for using up yarn from your stash or adapting the design to your specific preferences.

Blocking is an important finishing step for this lace shawl, requiring pins or wires to help shape the crescent form and enhance the delicate details of the finished piece.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Fofo shawl showcases multiple stitch techniques that work together to create its elegant aesthetic:

  • Flowery Stitch: The center section features a lovely flowery stitch pattern that serves as the visual focal point of the shawl
  • Wavy Pattern: The side sections incorporate a wavy pattern that creates graceful flowing lines from the center toward the edges
  • Lace Edging: A delicate lace edging completes the shawl, embellished with bobbles for added texture and visual appeal
  • Picot Finish: The edging concludes with a picot bind-off, creating a refined and decorative finished edge
  • Stockinette Stitch: Used as the base gauge measurement for this pattern

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Fofo requires approximately 826.7 to 904.1 yards of lace weight yarn, making it an efficient project that doesn't demand excessive yardage while still creating an impressive finished garment. The delicate nature of lace weight yarn allows the stitch patterns to display beautifully and creates the airy, elegant drape characteristic of fine shawls.

Needles: This pattern calls for two different needle sizes to accommodate different sections of the shawl. Size 4 mm (US 6) circular needles are used for the main body of the shawl, while size 5.5 mm (US 9) circular needles are used for the bind-off. This needle size variation helps create the desired fabric characteristics and edge finish.

Additional Materials: A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in ends, and pins or wires are essential for blocking the finished shawl to shape and enhance its crescent form and lace details.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches over 10 cm (4 inches) when measured in Stockinette stitch using 4 mm (US 6) needles on unblocked fabric. Maintaining this gauge is important for achieving the intended finished measurements, though the customizable nature of the pattern allows for creative adjustments.

Skill Level

Fofo is rated as an intermediate-level knitting project, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to explore more complex stitch patterns and shaping methods. The combination of flowery stitches, wavy patterns, and lace edging provides an engaging challenge without being overwhelming for experienced knitters.
