Product Description
If you have always wanted to try stranded knitting but didn’t find the courage, give Flowers on a Sunny Day Socks a try! Just a few rounds of stranded knitting in the beginning to let you dip your toes and give a pair of vanilla socks the eye-catching extra with sun, fair weather clouds and flowers on a meadow. Only super small amounts of the contrasting colors are needed, so they are perfect for using up some stash. Many thanks to my tech editor Michelle Hazell and my testknitters AaseE and SarahinHouston. Any remaining mistakes are mine.
Flowers on a Sunny Day Socks by Tanja Luescher
What is Being Made
Flowers on a Sunny Day Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Tanja Luescher for creating a pair of socks featuring decorative colorwork. The design showcases a sunny meadow scene with flowers, sun motifs, and fair weather clouds worked into the sock fabric. The pattern is available in four sizes: XS, S, M, and L, with sock circumferences ranging from 17 cm (6.75 inches) to 24.5 cm (9.75 inches).
Techniques Used
Stranded knitting is the primary colorwork technique featured in this pattern, making it an ideal beginner-friendly introduction to this method. The stranded knitting section appears only in the opening rounds of the sock, allowing new knitters to practice the technique with a manageable scope before moving on to simpler stockinette sections. This strategic placement helps build confidence without overwhelming the crafter.
The socks are constructed using a cuff-down construction method, beginning at the top and working toward the foot. The pattern incorporates a heel flap with a distinctive heart-shaped heel turn, adding both functionality and visual interest. The foot is completed with a star toe, though the pattern notes that knitters may substitute their favorite heel and toe techniques if desired.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic sock fabric. This stitch dominates the stockinette sections, which measure 14.5 cm to 23.5 cm (5.75 to 9.25 inches) depending on size. The stranded knitting sections use stockinette stitch as the base while incorporating contrasting yarn colors to create the decorative motifs of flowers, sun, and clouds.
Materials
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which is ideal for creating socks with good stitch definition and durability. The stranded knitting technique requires only small amounts of contrasting colors, making these socks perfect for using up yarn stash from previous projects. Essential tools include stitch markers (three are needed) and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends. While specific needle sizes are not detailed in the provided content, 4-ply yarn typically works well with needles in the US 1-3 range.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it accessible to knitters new to colorwork techniques. The limited stranded knitting section provides an excellent learning opportunity without the complexity of an all-over colorwork design. Knitters with basic sock-knitting experience will find this pattern manageable and rewarding.
