Fjäril (Swedish for “Butterfly”) is a simple yet interesting design, worked top down in stockinette with lace panels in the shape of butterflies. This only calls for 1-2 skeins of fingering weight yarn - perhaps that lovely skein of sock yarn that you’ve been saving?

Fjäril Cardigan by Yarn-Madness

What is Being Made

Fjäril is a lightweight, delicate cardigan designed for layering during warmer months. The name Fjäril is Swedish for "Butterfly," reflecting the garment's design aesthetic. This top-down cardigan is ideal for those transitional days when a dress or beautiful top needs just a light layer of warmth. The design is cropped in length and works beautifully with fingering weight yarn, making it an economical project requiring only 1–2 skeins of yarn—perfect for using up that special skein of sock yarn you've been saving.

Garment Specifications

The cardigan is available in seven sizes ranging from extra-small to 3XL:

  • XS/S/M/L: Chest circumference 79/88/95/100 cm (31/34.5/37/39.5 inches)
  • XL/2XL/3XL: Chest circumference 105/117/125 cm (42/46/49 inches)

Yarn Requirements

This project uses fingering weight yarn, also suitable for sock yarn applications. Yardage requirements vary by size:

  • XS/S/M/L: Approximately 365/400/460/485 meters (400/440/500/530 yards)
  • XL/2XL/3XL: Approximately 550/600/670 meters (600/650/730 yards)

The yardage specified is calculated for a cropped vertical length of 6 lace repeats, though the pattern allows for customization by adding additional length as desired.

Knitting Techniques

Fjäril employs a top-down construction method, which allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and easily adjust the final length. The primary stitch pattern is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric base. The cardigan's visual interest comes from strategically placed lace panels shaped like butterflies, adding an elegant and delicate detail to an otherwise simple design.

Stitches and Abbreviations

The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and techniques:

  • K: Knit
  • P: Purl
  • sts: Stitches
  • CO: Cast on
  • pm: Place marker
  • ppm: Place pattern marker

The lace panels are worked using yarn overs and decreases to create the butterfly motif, a classic lace-knitting technique that adds visual texture and interest to the stockinette base.

Difficulty Level

This cardigan is rated as an intermediate project, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle lace work. The combination of stockinette stitch with lace panels requires comfort with basic decreases and yarn overs, as well as the ability to read and follow a lace chart or written lace instructions.

Materials and Tools

In addition to fingering weight yarn, knitters will need appropriate needles for the yarn weight selected and standard knitting tools. The pattern references the use of markers to track pattern repeats and construction points, making organization and accuracy easier throughout the project.
