Product Description
Fizzgigs are very fluffy, adorable and sometimes grumpy creatures that appear in the world of The Dark Crystal. They are round, with a long tail, four little feet and a big mouth. This pattern gives you all the information you need to crochet your very own Fizzgig, in a choice of two sizes.
The instructions are detailed and easy to follow, with full details of any more advanced stitches and techniques. This includes how to do the loop stitch and how to brush it to create the fur.
You will need DK yarn, either variegated or in two slightly different colours (choose one to make feet as well, this is yarn A).
Large Fizzgig: 75g yarn A. 65g yarn B. 15g cream yarn. 15mm or 16.5mm yellow or amber safety eyes. Small Fizzgig: 45g yarn A. 35g yarn B. 10g cream yarn. 12mm or 13.5mm yellow or amber safety eyes. Both versions: Small amount of brown yarn for nose (or black if you make a grey Fizzgig), and eyepatch if you wish to make this.
Fizzgig Amigurumi Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
This downloadable crochet pattern by designer Lucy Collin allows you to create a Fizzgig amigurumi—a plush, round stuffed toy character inspired by creatures from The Dark Crystal universe. The Fizzgig features a characteristically fluffy appearance, a long tail, four small feet, and a distinctive large mouth. The pattern is designed to be worked in two size options, giving crafters flexibility in their finished project dimensions.
Craft and Techniques
This is an intermediate-level crochet project suitable for crafters with foundational amigurumi experience. Amigurumi is the Japanese technique of crocheting small, stuffed three-dimensional toys using tight stitches to create firm, shapely forms. A key technique featured in this pattern is yarn brushing, which creates the signature fluffy texture characteristic of a Fizzgig. The brushing process is applied during construction, particularly in the early rounds of the body, to achieve the desired soft, fuzzy appearance that defines these creatures.
Stitches and Construction
The pattern works in rounds to build the three-dimensional form. Construction begins with rounds 1 through 4 for the body, which serve as the foundation regardless of which size option you choose. The tight, consistent stitching typical of amigurumi ensures the stuffed toy maintains its shape and prevents filling from showing through.
Materials: Yarn and Tools
This pattern calls for DK (double knitting) weight yarn, which is the standard yarn weight in the UK. The pattern notes that worsted weight yarn can be substituted, particularly for crafters in the US where worsted is more commonly available. Worsted weight is slightly thicker than DK but will maintain the pattern's proportions when used as a substitute; you may need slightly more yardage and should consider increasing your hook size accordingly.
- Use consistent yarn weight throughout the entire project
- When possible, use the same yarn brand throughout to ensure uniform appearance and texture
- Test your chosen yarn beforehand to confirm it brushes out well, as this brushing technique is essential to achieving the Fizzgig's characteristic fluffy look
The pattern provides complete instructions for constructing your amigurumi Fizzgig in your choice of sizes, making it an accessible intermediate project for crocheters looking to expand their toy-making skills.
