Product Description
The First Impressions shawl, with its pattern of semi-circular bands, was inspired by the ripples on the pond where Monet grew his famous water lilies – which in turn inspired so many of his Impressionist paintings.
The crescent shaped shawl features garter stitch bands interspersed with stockinette stitch with a super simple lace pattern. Gentle pleats finish it off neatly.
A solid or gently variegated yarn will be shown to advantage in the cozy, pretty shawl.
A very relaxing knit, this pattern is perfect for TV knitting or social knitting.
Pattern is provided in two sizes.
First Impressions Shawl by Brenda Castiel Designs
Project Overview
The First Impressions Shawl is a crescent-shaped knit design inspired by the ripples and water lily imagery from Claude Monet's Impressionist paintings. This downloadable PDF pattern features semi-circular bands that create a graceful, flowing silhouette perfect for both everyday wear and special occasions. The shawl is available in two sizes, measuring approximately 16 inches (40 cm) or 19 inches (48 cm) deep, and is designed to use one or two skeins of yarn depending on the size selected.
What You'll Create
Knitters will produce a cozy, elegant crescent shawl with a relaxed drape and gentle pleats. The semi-circular band construction creates visual interest while remaining beginner-friendly. This versatile accessory works beautifully in solid or gently variegated yarns, allowing the stitch patterns to take center stage.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The First Impressions Shawl employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner to intermediate knitters:
- Garter Stitch Bands: Alternating sections of garter stitch (knit every row) create texture and structure throughout the design
- Stockinette Stitch: Smooth stockinette sections provide contrast and visual flow between the garter stitch bands
- Simple Lace Pattern: A super simple lace component adds delicate openwork details without overwhelming new knitters
- Pleating: Gentle pleats finish the edges, adding dimension and a polished final touch
Knitting Specifications
Needles: US size 5 (3.75 mm) straight or circular needles, 24 inches (60 cm) long
Gauge: 24 stitches = 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch after blocking. The pattern notes that gauge is not crucial but will affect the total amount of yarn used.
Notions Required: Stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping sections
Yarn Requirements
This pattern is designed for 3-ply and 4-ply weight yarns. The shawl uses one or two skeins total, making it an economical project. Solid or gently variegated yarn choices will best showcase the stitch patterns and construction details.
Difficulty Level and Knitting Experience
Rated as Easy to Intermediate, the First Impressions Shawl is an excellent choice for beginner knitters looking to expand their skills while creating a wearable finished object. The straightforward stitch combinations—primarily garter and stockinette with simple lace—make this pattern ideal for TV knitting or social knitting situations where you don't need to concentrate intensely on complex techniques. The relaxing, meditative nature of the repetitive bands makes this project particularly enjoyable for knitters seeking a calming creative experience.
