Product Description
This is a fun costume hat you can make your loved ones that isn't just a fireman hat, but also a safari hat and sailor hat if you simple change the colors. I also provide 2 versions a round loom 48 peg version and a x loom, flexee loom version for the large gauge. The pattern includes both versions along with the video tutorial. I used more than a single skein of Lions Brand Hometown USA yarn, so you will need to buy 2 skeins to complete the project. You can make a doll size simply using the 3/8" gauge in all types of looms. The sizing can vary depending on the number of rows you do to be a child size or adult size. This is an intermediate advanced pattern but well worth the effort to learn. As always if you run into any questions feel free to contact me.
Fireman Hat by Scarlett Royale
What Is Being Made
The Fireman Hat is a knitted loom project designed by independent designer Scarlett Royale. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a classic fireman-style hat using loom knitting techniques. The finished hat is suitable for crafters with intermediate knitting experience.
Loom Knitting Craft & Technique
This project utilizes loom knitting, a fiber craft that creates knitted fabric using pegs on a circular or specialized loom rather than traditional hand knitting needles. Loom knitting offers an accessible alternative to needle knitting, allowing crafters to produce professional-looking knitwear with consistent tension and stitch definition. The Fireman Hat pattern employs a 48-peg round loom with a 5/8" gauge measurement, which determines the size and drape of the finished garment.
Equipment & Tools Required
To complete this project, crafters will need:
- One 48-peg 5/8" gauge round loom
- A Large Universal 5/8" gauge X Loom, or two packages of Flexee Looms as an alternative
- A looming hook for manipulating stitches during the knitting process
Stitches & Looming Techniques
The Fireman Hat pattern incorporates several fundamental loom knitting stitches and techniques:
- K (Flat Knit): The foundational stitch created by tossing the bottom loop over the top loop on each peg
- K2tog (Knit 2 Stitches Together): A decreasing technique where two loops are tossed over the top working strand simultaneously, used to shape the hat
- P (Purl): A textured stitch created by pulling the working yarn from the bottom of the stitch through to the top, removing the existing stitch and placing the new stitch on the peg
- P2tog (Purl 2 Stitches Together): A decreasing purl variation where the working yarn is sent through the bottom of two stitches and purled together
- CH CO (Chain Cast On): The cast-on method used to begin the project, created by making a slip knot, pulling loops behind pegs sequentially, and pulling the working yarn through each loop while tightening
- SL (Slip): A stitch technique that skips a peg, often used for shaping and texture variation
Yarn & Materials
The Fireman Hat pattern calls for 2 skeins of Lions Brand Hometown USA yarn in a super chunky weight. Super chunky yarn creates quick, satisfying results and produces a dense, warm fabric ideal for a structured hat design. Lions Brand Hometown USA is a popular choice for loom knitting projects due to its consistent texture and availability.
Pattern Format
This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, making it convenient for digital access and printing. The pattern includes a video tutorial link for visual learners seeking step-by-step guidance throughout the construction process.
