Product Description
Use any number of colours, in any sequence you like - why not use up all those bits of aran yarn leftover from other projects?
The mittens are very warm and the stitch pattern is easy to do: the colour effect and texture are achieved solely by the use of slipped stitches, and knit and purl - definitely no stranded colour knitting necessary.
The mittens are knitted in the round. For the shaping, you will need to be familiar with the decreases k2tog, p2tog, ssk and ssp, and with the technique of grafting for the last few stitches. For size L a few stitches will be increased too, by making a stitch (or any other method you like to use).
The pattern has 3 sizes: Women's XS/S, M and L, with an inner circumference of the mitten of 18, 20 and 22cm (7⅛, 7⅞ and 8⅝”). Due to the peasant thumb, choose the size generously, so that it will also fit on the wider part underneath the thumb. Add 1-2cm to your circumference above thumb. The smallest size will also fit a teenager.
Fiery Mittens by Dagmar Mora
What is Being Made
Fiery Mittens are a pair of warm, colorful mittens designed by Dagmar Mora. These mittens feature a striking stitch pattern that creates astonishing colour effects combined with strong texture. The pattern is versatile and allows knitters to use any number of colours from two upwards, making them ideal for using up leftover aran yarn from other projects. Three sizes are available: Women's XS/S, M, and L, with inner circumferences of 18cm (7⅛"), 20cm (7⅞"), and 22cm (8⅝") respectively.
Techniques Used
The Fiery Mittens are constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level knitters. The pattern incorporates a peasant thumb construction, which requires careful sizing considerations—knitters should choose their size generously to accommodate the wider part underneath the thumb, adding 1-2cm to their circumference above the thumb for proper fit. The mittens feature a stitch pattern that is described as easy to execute despite creating complex visual effects. Tension testing is recommended before beginning, with specific guidance provided on page 2 of the pattern.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch used in Fiery Mittens is stocking stitch, which serves as the foundation for the colorwork pattern. The pattern creates texture and colour effects through its stitch structure, though the exact stitch pattern is designed to be straightforward enough for intermediate knitters to manage. The pattern includes a cuff section that can be worked with optional needle downsizing for a snugger fit.
Materials and Tools
- Yarn: At least 2 colours of aran or worsted weight yarn, with 1 skein (170m / 186 yards) required for each colour. The pattern features Rowan Pure Wool Aran in the photographed version, using colours #679 Ember, #681 Blood, and #678 Honey
- Needles: 1 set of 4mm / US size 6 double pointed needles for main construction; optional 1 set of 3.5mm / US size 4 double pointed needles for the cuff to achieve a snugger fit
- Tension: 20 stitches x 28 rows = 10x10cm (4x4") in stocking stitch
Difficulty Level
Fiery Mittens are rated as an intermediate knitting project. While the stitch pattern itself is described as easy to execute, the combination of colorwork, peasant thumb construction, and the need for proper tension and sizing makes this project suitable for knitters with some experience beyond the absolute beginner level.
