Festive Playtime Skirt by Sam Hermes

What Is Being Made

The Festive Playtime Skirt is a crocheted children's skirt designed for ages 1-6 years. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a festive garment suitable for young children, combining playful construction with celebratory design elements including decorative pom-poms and optional ribbon accents.

Crochet Techniques Used

This beginner-level crochet pattern employs several fundamental techniques appropriate for crafters new to the craft. The design incorporates front post half trebles and back post half trebles to create textured stitch definition, allowing the skirt to have visual interest and dimensional structure. The pattern also features V-stitches (constructed as treble, chain-1, treble all worked into the same stitch), which create decorative openwork sections and contribute to the festive aesthetic. Working in rounds forms the foundation of the skirt construction, building from the waistband outward to create the finished garment.

Stitches Used

The Festive Playtime Skirt utilizes essential crochet stitches including:

  • Chain stitch (ch) – the foundation stitch for starting the pattern
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
  • Half treble (htr) – a medium-height stitch providing structure and drape
  • Front post half treble (Fbhtr) – worked around the post of stitches from previous rows for textured effects
  • Back post half treble (Bphtr) – creates dimensional texture working behind the post
  • Treble (tr) – used within V-stitch construction for decorative elements

The pattern also incorporates front loop only (Flo) techniques, where stitches are worked through only the front loop of the previous stitch, creating distinctive ridged textures that enhance the visual design.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Festive Playtime Skirt pattern calls for Paintbox Simply Aran yarn in three coordinating colors: Paper White (200) as Yarn A, Rose White (213) as Yarn B, with an option to substitute Stylecraft Special Aran Lipstick Red, and King Cole Tinsel Chunky Silver (206) as Yarn C for festive sparkle. The yarn weights used are aran weight and chunky weight, providing excellent stitch definition and quick project completion suitable for beginner crocheters.

The pattern requires 5mm and 5.5mm crochet hooks to work with the specified yarn weights, allowing for gauge adjustments and varied stitch heights throughout the design. Additional materials include a stitch marker for tracking rounds, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors for cutting yarn, and a pom-pom maker for creating the decorative pom-pom embellishments that add playful texture to the finished skirt. Ribbon is optional for creating a decorative or functional waistband tie.

Pattern Notes

This is a free, downloadable PDF pattern designed by Sam Hermes of @littlebudcreations. The pattern is suitable for beginner-level crocheters and is written using UK crochet abbreviations. Finished sizes are approximate and will vary depending on whether additional rounds are added or subtracted during construction, allowing for customization to fit individual children within the 1-6 year age range.
