Feng Shui Knit Top by Kraftling

What Is Being Made

Feng Shui is a knitted top inspired by traditional architecture. This design is worked flat from the bottom up in a single piece, making it an efficient construction method that minimizes seaming. The finished garment offers a flattering fit and is available in five sizes ranging from Small to XXL, with bust measurements of approximately 32-34 inches through 40-42 inches. The top features positive ease of approximately 2-3 inches for comfortable wearing.

Knitting Techniques and Stitch Work

This intermediate-level design employs fundamental knitting techniques to create visual interest and structure. The pattern uses knit and purl stitches as the foundation for the garment's construction. Two distinct lattice-type patterns are created through the combination of carrying yarn in front and slipping stitches, which are traditional methods for creating textured colorwork effects without actually working with multiple colors. Simple increases and decreases are used strategically to shape the sleeves, providing a tailored fit. The neckline is finished with a bind off and cast on technique, creating a clean edge at this important design feature.

Yarn and Materials

Feng Shui is designed to be worked with Brooklyn Tweed's Arbor yarn in the colorway Klimt. Arbor is a DK weight yarn, making it ideal for creating excellent stitch definition that showcases the intricate lattice patterns and textured stitchwork. Yarn requirements vary by size: Small and Medium require 7 skeins each (145 yards, 50 grams per skein), while Large, Extra Large, and XXL each require 8, 8, and 9 skeins respectively. The working gauge is 22 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, which is essential information for achieving proper fit and drape.

Pattern Format and Difficulty Level

This is an intermediate-level knitting pattern available as a downloadable PDF. The intermediate difficulty reflects the combination of basic stitch techniques with the more nuanced work of creating lattice patterns through yarn manipulation and slip stitches. The minimal seaming required and the flat construction method make this project accessible to knitters with solid foundational skills who are ready to explore textured stitch patterns.
