Product Description
I developed this pattern for an event at Schuler Books. The event supported Lansing Comfort Bears, a local effort to put stuffed animals in police cruisers in the event a child is in a traumatic situation.
I expected participants from never-knit-before to professional knit instructor. I did get that variety. The pattern here is a slightly different version than that which I handed out the night of the event.
The PDF pattern linked here is free for gift, charity and personal use. Print and share, but please leave it in this exact version when you do.
*There is also a fuller-featured version. It includes tips and hints to help even basic, new knitters through the project.
That pattern sells for $6 and one dollar from each pattern will be donated to EVE (End Violent Encounters), an amazing local charity which has a great record helping women get into safe new lives. [Click Here for that enhanced pattern][1].*
Fast-Finish Teddy-Free Version by ColorJoy by LynnH
What Is Being Made
The Fast-Finish Teddy-Free Version is a beginner-friendly knitted stuffed toy bear designed by ColorJoy by LynnH. This streamlined pattern creates a cuddly teddy bear approximately 10 inches tall by 6 inches wide, perfect for gift-giving or personal collection. The free version offers a simplified approach to toy knitting, making it accessible to knitters new to amigurumi and stuffed animal construction.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The primary construction method uses garter stitch, which is created by knitting every row on both the right and wrong sides. Garter stitch produces a textured, ridged fabric that works well for stuffed toys because of its stability and ability to contain fiberfill without showing through. The pattern instructions reference both row counts and garter ridge measurements, with two rows of knitting equaling one visible ridge of garter stitch when measured vertically.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch: The foundational stitch throughout the pattern, created by knitting every row to produce the characteristic horizontal ridges
- Standard knit and purl stitches: Basic stitches used in combination to shape the bear's body, head, limbs, and features
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: The pattern calls for 50 grams of Aran-weight yarn (also called heavy-worsted weight, rated 4.5 stitches per inch). The designer used Berroco Weekend, a cotton and acrylic blend that provides durability and easy care for a toy that may be frequently handled or washed. Alternative yarn weights can be substituted using needles approximately two sizes smaller than normally recommended for that yarn weight, though this will affect the final bear's size and yardage requirements.
Needles: Size 5 US (3.75mm) knitting needles are specified for standard gauge. The pattern notes that relaxed knitters may want to consider sizing down to a smaller needle to ensure the polyester fiberfill stuffing does not show through the finished fabric.
Gauge: The designer's gauge is approximately 18.5 stitches per 4 inches (10 centimeters) and approximately 18 garter ridges (36 rows) per 4 inches (10 centimeters) when measured unstretched.
Additional Materials: A small amount of polyester fiberfill is needed for stuffing the completed bear, along with standard knit tools for finishing.
