Product Description

Fairfield Harvest HatThis hat is a fun cosy combination of whizz through slipped stitch sections, interspersed garter ridges, and the intricate looking beauty of a multi coloured linen stitch crown, which is still also so easy to create. It take just small amounts of each of the 3 colours used, so great for using up leftovers. ‘Slouch’ Note: It is not designed to be a very slouchy beanie, but you can add more ‘slouch’ if you wish to by working extra rounds at certain points in the pattern. The matching Shawl is also available.

Fairfield Harvest Hat by Bex Knitty Designs

Project Overview

The Fairfield Harvest Hat is an intermediate-level knitting pattern that combines multiple stitch techniques to create a textured, cosy hat with visual interest. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Bex Knitty Designs features a harmonious blend of simple and intricate stitch work, making it an engaging project for knitters looking to expand their technical skills while achieving professional-looking results.

What is Being Made

This pattern creates a finished hat suitable for everyday wear. The design incorporates a crown section featuring multi-coloured linen stitch work that appears intricate and decorative, paired with a body that uses slipped stitch sections and garter ridges. A matching shawl pattern is also available as a coordinating design from the same designer.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Fairfield Harvest Hat employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques that build foundational skills:

  • Slipped stitch sections – These create visual texture and are worked quickly, making them satisfying to knit
  • Garter ridges – Interspersed throughout to add dimension and break up stitch patterns
  • Multi-coloured linen stitch – Used in the crown to create an intricate appearance while remaining accessible for intermediate knitters
  • Yarn management – Yarn brought forward and backwards between needles for colour work and stitch manipulation

Stitches and Decreasing Methods

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with strategic decreasing:

  • Casting on and binding off – Essential techniques for starting and finishing the hat
  • Knit and purl stitches – The foundation of all stitch patterns used throughout
  • SSK (slip, slip, knit) – A left-leaning decrease used in crown shaping
  • K2tog (knit two together) – A right-leaning decrease for balanced crown decreases

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Fairfield Harvest Hat requires approximately 185 metres (202 yards) of sport weight yarn in total. The pattern uses multiple colours, with the sample featuring Mirasol Sulka Nina yarn. Yarn A (Cedar) requires approximately 120 metres (130 yards).

Recommended Yarn Characteristics: Any sport weight yarn that offers good drape and stitch definition will work well for this pattern. The sample yarn, Mirasol Sulka Nina, is a premium blend of 60% wool (merino), 20% silk, and 20% alpaca, which provides softness, lustre, and excellent stitch visibility. Sport weight yarn is ideal for this design as it creates a fabric with enough structure for stitch definition while remaining lightweight and comfortable to wear.

Needles: While specific needle sizes are not detailed in the provided content, sport weight yarn typically works well with US 4-6 (3.5-4mm) needles, though pattern instructions will specify the exact requirements.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with decreases, colour changes, and multiple stitch patterns within a single project. The combination of quick slipped stitch sections with more involved linen stitch work provides variety and maintains interest throughout the knitting process.
