Product Description
I designed this to have a strong Pre-Raphaelite and Arts & Crafts movement influence, combining detail with functionality.
I chose to use a slightly unusual construction twist, knitting the cuff of the sock flat then grafting it together to enable me to include rich swathes of leaves with clusters of buds all contained by an interlaced knotwork braid before the sock continues from the top down with a practical, well fitting heel and body ornamented with a column of leafy lace.
The result is a sock that is lavishly detailed, yet sensibly enough styled to work under shoes comfortably.
When planning your supplies for this, you will want to knit the cuff on needles one or two sizes smaller than you choose for the body of the sock. Because there is no ribbing, the cuff is a little more open than most socks, making the smaller needle particularly essential if you have slim ankles.

Faerie Queen Socks by Sally Pointer
What is Being Made
The Faerie Queen Socks are a pair of knitted socks designed with strong Pre-Raphaelite and Arts & Crafts movement influences. These socks combine decorative detail with practical wearability, featuring lavishly ornamented cuffs and legs that remain comfortable enough to wear under shoes. The design showcases rich botanical motifs and intricate knotwork throughout.
Construction Technique
This sock pattern employs an unusual construction method that sets it apart from standard sock knitting. The cuff is knitted flat rather than in the round, then grafted together to create a seamless join. This distinctive approach allows the designer to incorporate elaborate decorative elements in the cuff section before transitioning to a more traditional top-down construction for the heel and body of the sock. This hybrid technique balances aesthetic ambition with practical fit and comfort.
Stitch Details and Motifs
The Faerie Queen Socks feature multiple stitch techniques working together to create their distinctive appearance:
- Interlaced knotwork braid: A complex braid pattern that frames and contains the decorative elements in the cuff section
- Leaf clusters with buds: Rich swathes of botanical leaves combined with bud details, creating the Pre-Raphaelite aesthetic
- Leafy lace column: A vertical lace pattern running down the leg of the sock, providing ornamentation while maintaining breathability
- Practical heel and body construction: Standard sock shaping techniques ensure proper fit and durability in high-wear areas
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Faerie Queen Socks are worked in 4-ply yarn, also known as sock or fingering weight yarn. The designer used Knitpicks Palette yarn for the sample. The pattern is worked on UK8/US10 size needles and requires approximately 72 grams or 334 yards of yarn total for both socks. A standard 100-gram ball of most typical sock yarns will provide ample yardage. The sample was completed using one 50-gram ball of main color yarn and less than one 50-gram ball of contrast color, making this an efficient pattern for stash use.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. The combination of flat knitting, grafting, complex stitch patterns including interlaced knotwork and lace work, and the transition between different construction methods requires solid foundational knitting skills and familiarity with techniques such as lace knitting and Kitchener stitch grafting.
