It can be either knit in the round, or it can be knit flat, there are instructions for both. This pattern’s gauge is 13 stitches in 4 inches/10 cm in stockinette stitch. There is a list of recommended yarns and needle sizes for each yarn listed in the pattern. You will need yarn (up to 60 grams for the smallest size, up to 130 grams for the largest size), knitting needles to obtain the gauge, a tapestry needle to weave in the yarn ends. A stitch marker, two buttons, sewing needle and a matching thread to sew on the buttons, three stitch holders. If you are making the hat that is knit in the round, you will need either double pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop. If you are making a hat that is knit flat, you can use any type of knitting needles.
Extra Warm Earflap for Everyone Knitting Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Extra Warm Earflap for Everyone is a knitted hat design featuring earflaps, created by designer Agnese Iskrova. This pattern produces a cozy, functional hat suitable for cold weather wear. The design accommodates multiple sizes, ranging from smaller to larger head measurements, making it accessible for various wearers. The hat is constructed using a flat knitting method rather than in-the-round, allowing knitters flexibility in their needle choice.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This beginner-friendly knitting pattern employs fundamental techniques appropriate for those new to the craft. The hat is knit flat, meaning it is worked back and forth on straight needles rather than on circular needles, simplifying the construction process for less experienced knitters. The finished pieces are then assembled using a tapestry needle to sew seams and close the back of the hat. Button closures are incorporated into the design, requiring basic sewing skills to attach two buttons using a sewing needle and matching thread.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure in this pattern is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a recognizable V-pattern on the right side. Stockinette stitch is a foundational knitting stitch that alternates knit and purl rows, making it ideal for beginners to practice and master.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 13 stitches in stockinette stitch over 4 inches (10 centimeters). Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the hat fits correctly across all available sizes. The pattern offers multiple size options, with yarn requirements ranging from up to 60 grams for the smallest size to up to 130 grams for the largest size, allowing customization based on the intended wearer.
Materials Required
- Yarn: Chunky weight yarn in quantities specified by size selection (60–130 grams total). The pattern suggests BERGÈRE DE FRANCE Alaska, a blend of 50% acrylic and 50% superwash wool, available in 50-gram balls with approximately 55 meters (60 yards) per ball.
- Knitting needles: Size 5.5mm (US size 9) needles or the size needed to obtain the specified gauge. Since the hat is knit flat, any style of knitting needles may be used, including straight needles, bamboo needles, or metal needles according to personal preference.
- Additional notions: A tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming; two buttons for closures; a sewing needle and matching thread for attaching buttons; three stitch holders for managing active stitches during construction.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent choice for knitters who are new to the craft or returning after time away. The straightforward flat-knit construction, reliance on basic stockinette stitch, and simple finishing techniques with buttons make this an approachable project for developing foundational knitting skills.
