Product Description
The top is worked in one piece, from top to bottom, seamless.
The stitch pattern is very elastic - it gradually stretches at the bust and hips, and tightens at the waist, giving the top an excellent fit even with no decreases made.
If you need a larger size than those offered, you can adapt the pattern by slightly changing your gauge.
The name of this top came from my friend's photo of Estonian beach in winter. Thank you, Ket!
The pattern was tested twice with gorgeous FO's, and I am very grateful to all my testers for their help.

Estonian Waves Top by Lena Fedotova
What is Being Made
The Estonian Waves Top is a seamless crochet garment worked in one piece from top to bottom. This intermediate-level design features a distinctive wave pattern throughout and is available in multiple sizes ranging from Child 2-4 (21-23" / 53-58cm) through Large (38-40" / 96-106cm). The top combines fitted construction with the flowing aesthetic of repeating wave motifs, making it suitable for various ages and body types.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental crochet techniques to create its signature wave texture and structure. The design utilizes post stitches—specifically back post single crochet (bpsc) and front post single crochet (fpsc)—which create dimensional texture by working into the posts of previous rows rather than into the top loops. These techniques are essential for achieving the wave pattern's visual depth and three-dimensional quality.
The garment is constructed seamlessly, meaning all increases and shaping occur within the continuous rounds rather than through seaming separate pieces. The pattern divides each round into logical sections (front, sleeve, shoulder, and other areas) to simplify construction and tracking of stitch counts. This approach reduces finishing work and creates a more polished final garment.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch) — foundational stitch used for creating the base and turning chains
- Single crochet (sc) — primary stitch providing structure and density
- Back post single crochet (bpsc) — creates dimensional texture by working around the post of the previous row
- Front post single crochet (fpsc) — works in the opposite direction of bpsc to create wave texture
- Treble crochet (tc) — taller stitch used within the wave pattern for variation in height
- Slip stitch (sl st) — joins rounds and creates seamless transitions
The wave pattern (WP) repeats as a unit throughout the garment, with one complete wave measuring 19 stitches. Understanding how to work the wave pattern repeat is central to successfully completing this project, as the entire visual character of the top depends on consistent execution of this motif.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The Estonian Waves Top is designed for Ivushka by Moscow Yarn Company in Fingering / 4 ply weight. This yarn is composed of 50% bast plant-based cellulose (bpsc) and 50% cotton, offering a breathable, lightweight blend ideal for garments intended to be worn close to the skin. Each 100-gram skein provides 470 yards (430 meters) of yardage. For the S/M size, the pattern requires 3 skeins in total, allowing for the full garment construction plus a small amount for weaving in ends.
Hook and Notions: A US C/2 (3.0 mm) crochet hook is used throughout the pattern. This hook size is standard for working with fingering-weight yarn and creates the appropriate gauge for proper fit. Additional tools include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and securing the finished garment, and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points within each round.
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of one complete wave pattern repeat (19 stitches) and 8 rows measuring 2.75 inches (7 centimeters). Achieving accurate gauge is essential for proper fit, particularly in a seamless top where shaping depends on precise stitch counts. Crocheters should work a gauge swatch using the wave pattern stitch before beginning the garment to ensure their tension matches the designer's specifications.
