What you'll need

Product Description

This long cowl gets gradually wider from the top edge to the bottom. It has enough length to be worn over your head like a hood, or scrunched down into a cozy cowl. The texture of both the mainly knit side and the mainly purl side are both nice enough to be worn as the 'outside' making it reversible (2nd to last photo is the mostly knit side, last photo is the mostly purl side). If you can knit, purl, work in the round, M1 and k2tog, you can knit your own 'esonta'.

Esonta Cowl by Talitha Kuomi

What is Being Made

Esonta is a downloadable knitting pattern for a circular cowl designed by independent designer Talitha Kuomi. This intermediate-level project creates a finished cowl worked seamlessly in the round using sport-weight yarn, resulting in a versatile neckwear piece suitable for layering and everyday wear.

Yarn and Materials

The Esonta cowl requires 4 skeins of Harrisville Designs flyWHEEL, a 100% wool yarn in sport weight. Each skein yields approximately 170 yards and weighs 50 grams, providing ample yardage for the complete project. The pattern sample is shown in the colorway Driftwood, though the pattern is suitable for any sport-weight yarn of similar characteristics.

Needles required include four circular needles in graduated sizes: US 3/3.25 mm, US 4/3.5 mm, US 5/3.75 mm, and US 6/4 mm, all measuring 24 inches in length. A single stitch marker is needed to track rounds during construction.

Techniques and Construction Method

Esonta is worked seamlessly in the round using the progressive needle technique, where knitters begin with smaller needles and gradually increase to larger needle sizes as stitches are added. This method creates a smooth, graduated fabric without seaming. The pattern employs a specific gauge-based needle selection system: knitters determine their working gauge and then count down three needle sizes from the gauge needle to establish their starting needle size, progressing upward through each subsequent size.

The cowl construction incorporates strategic increases and decreases that maintain stitch count while creating visual texture and shaping. This technique allows the cowl to expand gradually as it grows in height, creating a flattering, contoured fit around the neck.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern used throughout Esonta is the Diagonal Ridge Stitch, which works over a multiple of 8 stitches. This stitch pattern creates the distinctive visual texture of the finished cowl.

  • Diagonal Ridge Stitch Pattern Sequence:
  • Round 1: *P2, M1, k6; repeat from * to end, slip marker—increases 21 stitches, bringing total to 189 stitches
  • Round 2: *P2, k5, k2tog; repeat from * to end, slip marker—decreases 21 stitches, returning to original stitch count

The pattern uses M1 (Make One) increases, specifically the right-leaning increase (RLI), though knitters may substitute their preferred make-one technique. The k2tog (knit two together) decrease balances the increases, maintaining gauge and stitch count while the diagonal ridge texture develops through the combination of purl columns, increases, knit stitches, and decreases.

Gauge and Sizing

The target gauge for Esonta is 20 stitches and 32 rounds over 4 inches, measured in the round when working the Diagonal Ridge Stitch on the largest needles (US 6/4 mm). Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions and ensuring the cowl drapes appropriately. The pattern provides clear guidance on needle selection based on individual gauge swatching, ensuring that all knitters can customize their needle sizes to achieve the specified gauge with their chosen yarn.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Esonta cowl is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in circular knitting and familiarity with basic increases, decreases, and stitch pattern reading. The progressive needle technique and Diagonal Ridge Stitch pattern require attention to detail and understanding of how stitches interact, making this an excellent project for knitters looking to expand their technical skills while creating a wearable finished object.
