Product Description

Dark, dreary days and nights call for something cozy - and a bit of sparkle. While jewels are great for livening up a chilly day, they don't do much for keeping you warm. Esmeralda will. The lace on the sleeves, hem, and cowl is designed to create jewel-shaped panels (esmeralda is Spanish for “emerald”) which add interest without letting in too much of that bitter wind.

Pattern prerequisites - knit, purl, M1, YO ssk, k2tog, knit in the round, follow a chart, basic sweater techniques like “reverse shaping” and "at the same time"

Esmeralda Knitted Sweater by Christina Loman

What is Being Made

Esmeralda is a cozy knitted sweater designed to provide warmth during cold weather while incorporating decorative lace elements inspired by jewel motifs. The design features lace panels on the sleeves, hem, and cowl that are shaped to resemble emerald gemstones, adding visual interest and sophistication to the garment. The sweater is available in four sizes: Small, Medium, Large, and 1X, with finished chest measurements ranging from 32 to 44 inches and lengths from 26.5 to 32.5 inches.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to achieve its elegant appearance. The sweater utilizes lace knitting to create the jewel-shaped panels that appear on the sleeves, hem, and cowl. The lace design is strategically placed to add decorative interest while maintaining the sweater's ability to provide warmth and wind protection. The construction involves working with both circular needles and double-point needles, allowing the knitter to work in the round for seamless construction. The pattern requires careful attention to stitch markers in two different colors to track pattern repeats and shaping throughout the project.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The primary stitch used in the body of Esmeralda is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric base. The gauge for this project is 16 stitches and 25 rows per 4 inches when worked in stockinette stitch, providing a fabric with good drape and structure. The lace panels incorporate openwork stitches that create the characteristic jewel-shaped motifs, requiring the knitter to work decreases and yarn overs in specific sequences. The cowl, sleeves, and hem all feature this lace patterning, making this an excellent project for knitters seeking to develop or refine their lace knitting skills.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Esmeralda is designed to be knitted with Cascade Yarns Lana D'Oro, a luxury blend yarn composed of 50% alpaca and 50% wool. This fiber combination provides both warmth and softness, making it ideal for a cozy sweater. The yarn is worsted weight, with each 100-gram skein yielding 219 yards (200 meters). The colorway used in the pattern is Night Swim, a dark color that complements the jewel-inspired design. Depending on the size being knitted, the project requires 5 to 6 skeins of yarn, allowing knitters to complete the sweater with minimal yardage waste.

Needles and Notions Required

The pattern calls for specific needle sizes to achieve proper gauge and construction. Knitters will need one set of US #7/4.5mm double-point needles for working smaller circumferences, such as the cowl or cuff areas. Circular needles in US #7/4.5mm are required in two lengths: a 24-inch needle for sizes Small and Medium, and a 32-inch needle for sizes Large and 1X. Additionally, one US #8/5mm circular needle in 24 inches is needed, likely for ribbing or other sections requiring slightly looser gauge. Beyond needles, the project requires stitch markers in two different colors to track pattern repeats and increases, waste yarn or a stitch holder for holding stitches temporarily, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends upon completion.
