What is Being Made

The Esen Cowl is a textured neck accessory designed as a relaxing, fast knit project suitable for beginners. This cowl features a finished circumference of 65 cm (25 ½ inches) and stands 28 cm (11 inches) high, making it a versatile piece that can be worn as a traditional cowl or adapted into an infinity scarf. The design is constructed as a seamless, in-the-round garment that creates a comfortable, close-fitting neckwear option.

Techniques Used

The Esen Cowl employs fundamental circular knitting techniques worked in the round on circular needles. The pattern utilizes a knitted cast-on method, where loops are inserted as if to knit and placed on the left hand needle to create the foundation stitches. The cowl is worked continuously in rounds using a textured rib stitch pattern that repeats over a multiple of 4 stitches, allowing for straightforward pattern memorization and execution. The design incorporates simple shaping through basic decreases and incorporates a button detail for finishing. The relaxing, repetitive nature of the stitch pattern makes this project ideal for knitters developing their circular knitting skills.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (k) – the fundamental stitch creating the V-shaped texture
  • Purl (p) – the reverse stitch used to create the textured rib pattern
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
  • Knit 2 together through the back loops (k2tbl) – a left-leaning decrease for directional shaping
  • Yarn over (yo) – creates decorative eyelets or lace elements within the pattern
  • Slip stitch (sl purlwise) – used for edge finishing and pattern transitions

Materials and Tools

The Esen Cowl is worked in bulky weight yarn, requiring approximately 160 grams or 160 meters (170 yards) of yarn. The project calls for US 10 / 6 mm circular needles measuring 65 cm (25 inches) long, though shorter circular needles may be substituted depending on individual needle preferences and hand size. Additional materials include 1 stitch marker for tracking round beginnings, 1 tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and 1 button for the finished detail. The recommended gauge is 12 stitches and 24 rows measured over 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches) in the textured rib stitch pattern.

Pattern Adaptability

The Esen Cowl pattern is designed with flexibility in mind. The textured rib stitch structure, working over a multiple of 4 stitches, allows easy adaptation to different yarn weights and finished dimensions. Knitters can modify the pattern to create an infinity scarf with approximately 150 cm (59 inches) circumference using the same bulky weight yarn and specified gauge. This adaptability makes the Esen Cowl an excellent foundational pattern for customizing neckwear to personal preferences and yarn availability.
