Ernie the Elephant Knitting Pattern by Stitch Witch Creations
What is Being Made
Ernie the Elephant is a finished knitted stuffed toy elephant designed by Sarah Louise Read of Stitch Witch Creations. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a sitting elephant that measures approximately 12 inches in height when completed. The toy is constructed from multiple knitted body parts that are sewn together and finished with safety eyes and stuffing to create a three-dimensional plush toy.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern uses Stylecraft Special Aran yarn in two colorways. The primary material is 80g of Dark Grey aran yarn, which forms the main body of the elephant. 25g of Cream aran yarn is used for contrast details. Additional materials include a small amount of white yarn for eye details, two 12mm safety eyes, polyester stuffing for filling the toy, and a tapestry needle for seaming and finishing.
Tools and Equipment
The pattern requires 4mm knitting needles for working with the aran-weight yarn. A tapestry needle is essential for weaving in ends and sewing the various knitted pieces together to construct the finished elephant.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Ernie the Elephant employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for an intermediate-level maker. The pattern uses the following core stitches and abbreviations:
- Knit stitch (K) – the basic forward stitch forming the foundation of the fabric
- Purl stitch (P) – the reverse stitch used to create texture variation
- Stocking stitch (St st) – the combination of knit and purl rows creating a smooth, classic knitted fabric surface
- Knit front and back (Kfb) – an increase technique that creates two stitches from one, used to expand the fabric for shaping body parts
- Knit two together (K2tog) – a decrease technique that reduces stitch count for shaping
- Purl two together (P2tog) – a purl-based decrease technique
The pattern construction begins with casting on a small number of stitches for each body part, then uses increases and decreases to shape individual components like the head, body, legs, ears, and trunk. The use of kfb increases in early rows creates the rounded forms characteristic of a stuffed toy. Each body part is worked separately before being assembled through seaming with the tapestry needle.
Pattern Structure and Assembly
The pattern is organized by body part, with detailed row-by-row instructions for construction. Makers are instructed to leave yarn tails when casting on each piece specifically for seaming seams during assembly. The modular construction approach allows crafters to complete individual components before joining them into the finished three-dimensional elephant toy, which is then stuffed and finished with safety eyes.
