Ermintrude Crochet Blanket by Amanda Perkins

What Is Being Made

The Ermintrude Crochet Blanket is a decorative throw blanket inspired by the beloved BBC children's television character Ermintrude the cow from The Magic Roundabout (1960s–1970s). The design features a very dark heather or blue background adorned with colorful crocheted flowers, echoing the flower that Ermintrude characteristically wore. This finished blanket measures approximately 70 x 50 inches, making it a substantial and versatile home accessory suitable for draping over furniture or using as a throw.

Yarn and Materials

This project uses DK and aran weight yarns, allowing crafters flexibility in yarn selection. The pattern calls for approximately 900 grams each of background yarn and bright flower colors. Recommended yarn brands include:

  • Fyberspates Vivacious DK or Scrumptious DK
  • Easyknits Deeply Wicked DK or Splendour DK
  • Skein Queen Desire, Blissful Plum, or Voluptuous
  • John Arbon Textiles Knit by Numbers or Viola
  • The Little Grey Sheep DK Gotland DK
  • Cascade Cascade 220 Sport
  • Knitpicks Wool of the Andes
  • King Cole Merino Blend DK

A 4.5 mm or 5 mm crochet hook is required, with hook size selection depending on individual tension—use 4.5 mm for loose tension and 5 mm for tight tension to achieve proper gauge.

Color Palette

The blanket features a very dark heather or blue background paired with a vibrant selection of flower colors. Crafters can choose from a bright palette including aqua, emerald, lime, gold, orange, rose, soft red, and lilac, allowing for personalization and creative color combinations.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

As an intermediate-level crochet project, the Ermintrude Blanket employs fundamental crochet techniques to create its floral motifs and blanket structure. The pattern utilizes standard crochet stitches to construct both the background base and the dimensional flower embellishments that define the design. Crafters should be comfortable with basic stitch work and shaping to successfully complete this project.

Finishing Details

The pattern emphasizes proper finishing techniques to ensure durability. Yarn ends should be sewn in securely to prevent them from popping out during use or washing, maintaining the blanket's polished appearance over time.
