Product Description

The size-inclusive Emmerly sweater will add a bit of grace to your wardrobe with its flattering ballet neck and gently flared, bracelet-length sleeves. There's a teensy bit of flare to the lower body, too, for a forgiving profile. Beginner-friendly, with lots of options to modify the fit, each with specific instructions. Test knitters throughout the size range were pleased with the fit. It's mostly relaxing stockinette, with a bit of fun contrast color.

The sample was worked with yarn from Jilly and Kiddles but the pattern lists several budget yarn options.

Designer email is included in the pattern in case you have questions.

Emmerly Sweater by Lena Mathisson

What is Being Made

The Emmerly Sweater is a knitted pullover sweater designed by independent designer Lena Mathisson. This garment is crafted as a downloadable PDF pattern and is suitable for knitters of all skill levels, particularly beginners. The sweater is available in nine graduated sizes, with finished bust measurements ranging from 35 inches (87 cm) to 66 inches (165 cm), accommodating a wide range of body types and fit preferences.

Size Range and Fit

The Emmerly Sweater is offered in sizes 1 through 9, organized into three groups for ease of pattern reading. The finished bust circumferences are: Sizes 1–4 range from 35 to 46.5 inches (87–116 cm); Sizes 5–7 range from 51 to 59 inches (127–147 cm); and Sizes 8–9 measure 62.5 to 66 inches (156–165 cm). The pattern is designed to be worn with 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 cm) of positive ease, meaning the finished garment will be larger than the wearer's actual measurements for a comfortable, relaxed fit. Detailed guidance on selecting the appropriate size is provided within the pattern documentation on page 3.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This sweater is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The primary stitch used throughout the garment is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a recognizable V-pattern on the right side. The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 30 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in stockinette stitch before blocking. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for ensuring the finished sweater meets the intended dimensions and drape.

Yarn and Materials

The Emmerly Sweater pattern calls for 4-ply weight yarn, also known as fingering-weight yarn. The sample garment shown in the pattern was knitted using Jilly and Kiddles "Fancy" yarn, a high-quality blend composed of 85% superwash merino wool and 15% nylon. This yarn provides 437 yards (400 meters) per 100 grams, offering excellent durability and elasticity due to the nylon content while maintaining the softness and temperature regulation of merino wool.

The pattern is flexible regarding yarn selection. Any wool or wool-based sock or fingering-weight yarn of equivalent weight will work well for this project. Alternative fiber types and fiber blends of similar weight may be substituted, though the resulting fabric's drape and appearance may vary from the original sample. For knitters seeking budget-friendly alternatives, the pattern recommends three suitable options:

  • Knit Picks Stroll
  • Cascade 220 Fingering
  • Rowan Super Fine Merino 4 Ply

The pattern provides guidance on estimating the total yarn quantity required based on the selected size, with the main color yardage specified within the downloadable PDF documentation.

Blocking and Finishing

The gauge measurement provided in the pattern is taken before blocking, indicating that the finished sweater will benefit from wet blocking to even out stitches, set the fabric, and achieve the intended final dimensions and drape. This finishing step is a standard practice in knitting and helps create a polished, professional appearance in the completed garment.
