Product Description
Sincerely Pam and I decided to start a new crochet trend! Two designers come up with a matching set using a stitch the crochet community would chose! The bean stitch was the first and we found it fun and exciting to work together!
Traditionally, I like designing hats but during these cold winter months, I always have layers on! I wanted to try something new, a garment that I would love in any season. And what better way to carry this item than wrap it as a scarf!!
Difficulty: Easy
Sizes included: 1 year to 1X, along with custom fit directions
All patterns are written in English and use standard American English crochet terms.

Emma Convertible Shrug by Crystalized Designs
What is Being Made
The Emma Convertible Shrug is a versatile crochet bolero designed by Crystalized Designs. This convertible shrug offers flexibility in styling, allowing crafters to create a garment that can be worn multiple ways. The pattern comes in child sizing, with the smallest size measuring approximately 26-27 inches in length with an 8-inch circumference at the arms, making it suitable for young children ages 1-3 years.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level crochet project utilizes fundamental techniques accessible to crafters with some experience. The construction method focuses on creating a wearable shrug using straightforward crochet methodology. The pattern was developed as part of a collaborative crochet trend initiated by two designers who selected half double crochet as the primary stitch, chosen through community input. This collaborative approach ensures the pattern uses stitches that appeal to the broader crochet community.
Stitches Used
The Emma Convertible Shrug primarily features half double crochet (hdc) as its main stitch. This stitch choice makes the project approachable for intermediate crocheters while creating a fabric with good drape and structure suitable for a shrug garment.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies the following gauge measurements:
- 6 half double crochet stitches = 2 inches
- 4 rows = 2 inches
Accurate gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. The pattern includes sizing information, with measurements being approximated and subject to individual variation based on tension and yarn characteristics.
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for 2-4 skeins of Loops & Threads Impeccable Glitter in Sterling. Each skein contains 3.5 ounces, 100 grams, and 217 yards (198 meters). This worsted weight yarn provides a sparkly finish that adds visual interest to the finished shrug.
Hook: A Boye I/9-5.50MM crochet hook is required to work with the specified yarn weight and achieve proper gauge.
Additional Supplies: A yarn needle is necessary for weaving in ends upon completion. The pattern also lists optional ¼-inch ribbon or smaller, allowing crafters to customize their finished shrug with decorative embellishments if desired.
Design Philosophy
The Emma Convertible Shrug represents an innovative approach to crochet pattern design, born from a collaborative effort between designers Pam and Crystal Bucholz of Crystalized Designs. The convertible nature of the shrug provides versatility in wear, while the intermediate difficulty level makes it accessible to crafters ready to expand their skills beyond beginner projects. The use of glitter yarn adds a celebratory element, making this shrug suitable for special occasions or everyday wear with sparkle.
