Emily Sweater Vest by Deb Hoss

What is Being Made

Emily is a shapely sweater vest designed by Deb Hoss, crafted as a versatile layering piece perfect for warding off winter chill. This fitted waistcoat features a slimming vertical rib pattern on the center front and back panels, bordered with Stockinette stitch for visual contrast and structure. Available in seven sizes ranging from 30½ inches to 54½ inches bust measurement (77.5 cm to 138.4 cm), Emily is designed to be worn with minimal ease for a tailored silhouette.

Knitting Techniques Used

Emily employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques that create both its aesthetic appeal and fitted construction. The garment is knit in the round from the bottom up until the armholes are reached, which allows for seamless construction and consistent stitch definition. At the armhole shaping, the piece is split and each side is worked separately, enabling customized shaping for a contoured fit. The designer incorporates short row shaping for refined shoulder construction and uses a 3-needle bind-off at the shoulders to create a secure, professional finish. Stitches are picked up around the neckline and armholes to continue the established rib pattern, creating a cohesive design detail that frames the garment opening.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The stitch work in Emily combines fundamental knitting stitches with strategic patterning:

  • Vertical Rib: The signature design element on center front and back panels, creating the slimming vertical lines that define the garment
  • Stockinette Stitch: Used as borders around the rib panels to frame the design and provide textural contrast
  • Decreases: Ssk (slip, slip, knit), k2tog (knit two together), and p2tog (purl two together) are used for shaping and waist definition
  • Increases: M1L (make one left) and m1R (make one right) are employed for strategic shaping throughout the garment
  • Long-tail Cast On: Used to begin the project with a sturdy, elastic foundation

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Emily is designed to be knit with worsted weight wool yarn, which works up quickly into a substantial yet wearable layering piece. Worsted weight provides excellent stitch definition for showcasing the vertical rib and Stockinette borders, while the wool fiber offers warmth and natural elasticity for a flattering fit. The pattern requires circular needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn, as well as stitch markers and a tapestry needle for finishing. Blocking is recommended to set the stitches and achieve polished final measurements.

Difficulty Level and Skills

Emily is rated as an intermediate knitting project, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex construction techniques. Required skills include long-tail cast on, circular knitting, various decreases and increases for shaping, stitch pick-up around curved edges, short row shaping for shoulder definition, and the 3-needle bind-off technique. Knitters should also be comfortable with blocking to achieve finished measurements and optimal garment drape.
