Product Description
Welcome to my new series of hand knit projects! Look for the '♥' as this signifies it is a World Central Kitchen pattern. The purchase of any ♥ pattern means half of your purchase goes towards emergency food and solutions to growing stronger communities and economies.
This is a pattern for a knitted slouchy beanie, worked from the bottom up and in the round, using the Fair-Isle knitting technique. An Alphabet chart is included in the pattern, so you may express whatever you like!
♥ Embrace Hat by Bunnymuff - Mona Zillah
What Is Being Made
The Embrace hat is a knitted cap designed by independent designer Mona Zillah under the Bunnymuff label. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished hat using traditional knitting techniques and colorwork elements.
Craft and Primary Technique
This pattern is a knitting project that uses circular knitting methods. The design employs both single-color and multi-color knitting techniques, incorporating color changes throughout the construction to create visual interest and depth in the finished hat.
Stitches Used
The Embrace hat pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches executed with precision:
- Knit stitch (k) - The primary stitch forming the base fabric
- Knit through the back loop (ktbl) - Creates twisted stitches for texture variation
- Knit two stitches together (k2tog) - A decrease stitch used for shaping
- Central double decrease (cdd) - Slip two stitches knitwise together, knit one stitch, then pass the slipped stitches over the knit stitch for centered decreasing
- Make one stitch knitwise (m1) - An increase worked by lifting the bar between two stitches and knitting or knitting through the back loop while twisting the bar
- Long-tail cast on - The recommended cast-on method for beginning the project
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Embrace hat is designed to work with 4-ply weight yarn (also known as fingering weight), specifically tested with premium Shetland wool options:
- Main Color (MC): 2 Ply Jumper Weight by Jamieson & Smith in color FC 14 (Dusk) - 100% Shetland wool; 125 yards (115 meters) per 25 grams; approximately 25g required
- Contrast Color 1 (CC1): Shetland Spindrift by Jamieson's of Shetland in color 72 (Damask) - 100% Shetland wool; 115 yards (105 meters) per 25 grams; approximately 13g required
- Contrast Color 2 (CC2): Shetland Spindrift by Jamieson's of Shetland in color 1280 (Buttermilk) - 100% Shetland wool; approximately 75 yards (70 meters) per 25 grams; approximately 15g required
Needles and Tools
The pattern calls for 2.75mm (US size 2) needles in either circular or double-pointed needle (DPN) format, allowing knitters to choose their preferred method for working in the round.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this hat pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable working with multiple colors, executing various decrease techniques, and managing circular knitting construction.
