What is Being Made

Emanate is a top-down, center-out shawl that offers a distinctive interpretation of the traditional shawl construction method. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a finished shawl with a 72-inch span and 18-inch height at center, making it a versatile accessory suitable for various styling options and occasions.

Construction and Design Approach

Unlike conventional top-down shawls that typically expand from a single point, Emanate takes a different approach to the traditional center-out construction technique. This design choice creates unique shaping and visual interest while maintaining the advantages of top-down knitting, which allows knitters to try on the piece as it grows and easily customize the final dimensions.

Knitting Techniques Used

The pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques:

• Garter stitch as the primary stitch pattern, creating a textured, reversible fabric
• Increases using the kfb (knit into front and back) method to shape the shawl
• Decreases using k2tog (knit two stitches together) for shaping and stitch management
• Wrap and turn (w&t) technique for short-row shaping, which creates depth and dimension in the shawl structure
• Stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction sections
• Slip stitches for seamless transitions between sections

Yarn and Materials

Emanate is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, specifically using Night Owl Fibers Snowy Owl DK, which is composed of 100% merino fiber. The pattern requires 1 skein each of four coordinating colorways: Bah Bah Black Sheep (A), Forbidden Forest (B), Sassy Pants (C), and Space City (D). Each skein contains 229 yards (209 meters) per 100 grams, providing approximately 916 yards total yardage for the completed shawl.

Tools and Gauge

The pattern calls for a US #7 (4.5mm) circular needle measuring 32 inches or longer to accommodate the increasing stitch count as the shawl expands. A tapestry needle is required for finishing and weaving in ends. The working gauge is 18 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches in garter stitch after blocking, which is typical for DK weight yarn at this needle size.

Difficulty Level

Emanate is rated as an intermediate knitting project. While garter stitch itself is beginner-friendly, the combination of multiple techniques—particularly the wrap and turn short-row shaping and the unconventional center-out construction—requires solid foundational knitting skills and the ability to read and follow pattern instructions with confidence.
