Product Description

This elephant rattle pattern is easy to follow, and the finished item works up quickly, making an adorable last-minute gift for a new baby.

The handle of the rattle is about 12 cm long, and is perfect for little hands to grasp. A large bell inside the head (with three smaller bells placed inside) makes a jingle noise when the rattle is shaken, and cellophane inside the ears makes them crinkle when moved. A satin ribbon tail is a nice ‘feely’ detail for babies to play with.

The written crochet pattern (in US terms) calls for 4 ply yarn in three colours (however, any number of colours could be used, depending on your choice), and double strands are used throughout. As a substitute, a single strand of chunky yarn could be used (also with a 5.00 mm hook), to give the same result.

Gauge is not important for this pattern.

Elephant Rattle by Crafty Creations

Project Overview

The Elephant Rattle is an intermediate-level crochet toy design created by Kirstin Campbell-Harris of Crafty Creations. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for crafting a soft, sensory-rich rattle toy suitable for babies and young children. The finished piece combines visual appeal with interactive sound elements, making it both a decorative and functional handmade toy.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a three-dimensional crocheted elephant figure designed to function as a baby rattle. The elephant toy incorporates multiple sensory features including bells and crinkly cellophane to engage infants and toddlers through sound and touch. The finished rattle combines soft crocheted fabric with internal sound-making elements, creating a complete toy suitable for young children.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

The Elephant Rattle pattern uses fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for an intermediate skill level. The construction method employs the following stitches and techniques:

  • Magic Ring (MR) – Used to create seamless circular foundations for shaping the elephant's body components
  • Chain Stitch (ch) – Forms the foundation chains for various sections of the pattern
  • Single Crochet (sc) – The primary stitch used throughout the pattern for building fabric density and structure
  • Slip Stitch (sl st) – Used to join rounds and create finished edges

The pattern uses US crochet terminology. The modular construction approach allows crafters to work individual pieces before assembling them into the complete elephant form. Stuffing with fiberfill and strategic placement of bells and crinkly materials occurs during the assembly process.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Elephant Rattle pattern calls for 4 ply yarn worked with double strands throughout, creating a thicker, more durable fabric suitable for a baby toy. The specific yarn colors and recommendations include:

  • Pale Turquoise 4 Ply – Kismet Yarns Soft & Gentle Baby 4 Ply in colour Aqua (worked as double strands)
  • Dark Turquoise 4 Ply – Blue Label Yarns and Crafts Classic 4 Ply Knitting in colour 092 (worked as double strands)
  • Grey 4 Ply – Blue Label Yarns and Crafts Classic 4 Ply Knitting in colour 059 (worked as double strands)
  • Black DK Yarn – Charity Double Knit Pullskein in colour Black (small amount for details such as eyes)

The pattern specifies an H (5.00 mm) crochet hook as the primary tool. Notably, gauge is not critical for this toy pattern, allowing crafters flexibility in their tension and stitch consistency. A darning needle is required for weaving in yarn ends and assembling components.

Additional Materials and Embellishments

Beyond yarn and crochet tools, the Elephant Rattle incorporates several materials to create its interactive features:

  • Fiberfill Stuffing – Fibre curl is specified for filling the crocheted elephant body
  • Sound Elements – One large bell approximately 20 mm in diameter and three small bells approximately 5 mm in diameter create auditory feedback
  • Crinkle Material – A small zip lock plastic bag filled with cellophane or other crinkly-sounding plastic provides textural sound variation
  • Decorative Trim – 15 cm of grey satin ribbon approximately 15 mm in width adds a finishing detail

Skill Level and Pattern Suitability

Classified as an intermediate difficulty pattern, the Elephant Rattle is suitable for crocheters with foundational knowledge of basic stitches and comfortable working in the round using magic rings. The pattern's intermediate rating reflects the multi-component assembly process and the coordination required to incorporate bells and crinkle materials during construction, rather than complex stitch variations.
