Product Description
As knitters we know how fast our little ones outgrow the things we make for them. Therefore I wanted to design something they can wear for a long time. Since small children grow more in length than in chest circumference, the little dress just transforms into a tunic style top as they get older. It’s worked top down with a round yoke and is seamless. The little extra neck opening makes it easy to pull the dress over the head.
Yarn: 1(2,2,2,2) skeins of Lismi Knits Magic Ball or Portland Gradient, color rainbow, worsted weight at approx. 220 yards a skein. Needles: Circular needles US 6 / 4 mm (or size to obtain gauge), 16″ long. For the body stitches you might want to switch to a 24″ length. 1 button, needle to sew in ends 5 stitch markers, crochet hook
The pattern also includes a picture tutorial how to do a 2 colored cast on.
A suggested substitute yarn is shown below.
Eleni's Dress by Christiane Burkhard
What is Being Made
Eleni's dress is a thoughtfully designed children's garment that grows with your child. The dress is engineered to transition seamlessly from a fitted dress silhouette in smaller sizes to a tunic-style top as children age and grow taller. Available in three size ranges—0-6 months, 12 months, and 18 months to 2T—this design solves the common problem of children outgrowing handmade pieces too quickly by adapting its proportions as the wearer develops.
Construction Method
Eleni's dress is constructed using a top-down seamless method, which means knitting begins at the neckline and progresses downward toward the hem. This approach offers several practical advantages: the ability to try on the garment as you work, the option to easily adjust length, and the elimination of seaming, which creates a more comfortable, finished garment for delicate skin. The seamless construction also simplifies finishing and reduces the need for additional assembly steps.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level project employs fundamental knitting techniques executed in the round on circular needles. The primary stitch pattern is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with characteristic V-shaped columns on the right side. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases, including M1 (make one) increases, which are worked by lifting the strand between needles from front to back and knitting through the back loop to create a twisted stitch that maintains fabric integrity.
Additional abbreviations and techniques referenced in the pattern include:
- Cast on (CO) and bind off (BO) for edge finishing
- Slip marker (Slm) and place marker (Pm) for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points
- Working in rounds (Rnd) on circular needles for seamless construction
- Gauge measurement in stockinette stitch: 21 stitches equals 4 inches, essential for achieving proper fit across the three size options
Materials and Tools
This project requires worsted weight yarn, specifically Lismi Knits Magic or Portland Gradient in the rainbow colorway. Yardage requirements vary by size: 1½ skeins for the smallest size (0-6 months) and 2 skeins for the larger sizes (12 months and 18 months-2T), with each skein containing approximately 220 yards. The yarn weight and yardage are carefully calculated to provide adequate fabric for the dress while remaining manageable for a child-sized garment.
Needles required include US 6 / 4 mm circular needles, 16 inches long, or whatever size is necessary to obtain the specified gauge of 21 stitches over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. For working the body stitches, the pattern suggests potentially switching to longer circular needles as the stitch count increases, a common practice in seamless garment construction to accommodate growing stitch counts comfortably.
Finished Measurements
The dress is designed with proportional chest circumferences for each size range: 18.8 inches for 0-6 months, 20.1 inches for 12 months, and 22.5 inches for 18 months-2T. These measurements ensure proper fit while allowing room for the dress to function as intended—fitting as a dress in the smallest sizes and gradually becoming a tunic as the child grows taller relative to their chest width.
