What Is Being Made

Elefred is a downloadable knitting pattern for a stuffed toy designed by independent designer Cilla Webb. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a three-dimensional plush toy using basic knitting techniques and colorwork.

Yarn Requirements

This pattern calls for DK weight yarn in the following quantities:

• 100g light blue
• 100g white
• 100g grey
• 25g blue
• 10g beige

The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using these DK weight yarns, making this an accessible project for crafters working with standard medium-weight yarn.

Tools and Materials

To complete Elefred, you will need 3.5 mm straight needles (or needles two sizes smaller than those recommended on your yarn ball band, to ensure stuffing does not show through the finished knitting). Additional materials include a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends, and stuffing to fill the completed toy pieces.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The primary stitch used throughout is stockinette stitch (St st), which creates the smooth, classic knit fabric that forms the base of each toy component.

Shaping is achieved through several standard techniques:

• Cast on and cast off to create and close edges
• Increases (cast on stitches mid-row) to expand pieces, such as when creating limbs and body sections
• Decreases using skpo (slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over) and k2tog (knit two together) to reduce stitch count and shape the toy

Colorwork Pattern

Elefred features a repeating three-row color stripe pattern that is worked consistently throughout all pieces. The pattern alternates between 3 rows of white and 3 rows of baby blue, creating a coordinated, multi-colored toy. This simple stripe repeat is accessible for intermediate knitters and does not require complex colorwork techniques such as intarsia or Fair Isle.

Construction Method

The toy is constructed from individual knitted pieces that are later assembled. Specific components include legs (made as two separate pieces) and a body section. Each piece is knitted flat using straight needles, then stuffed and sewn together using the tapestry needle. The pattern notes careful attention to seaming around detailed areas such as thumbs to ensure a neat, professional finish. The first 6 rows of certain pieces are left open initially and sewn closed after stuffing, allowing for easier filling without distorting the knitting.
