Product Description
One of the most popular exhibitions at the British Museum in the last year was the Beyond El Dorado exhibition of gold artefacts from the ancient civilizations of South America, in conjunction with the Museo del Oro in Bogota, Colombia. The spectacular exhibits showed the craftsmanship and technological achievements of these peoples, as well as giving an insight into their way of life and religious beliefs. This shawl is inspired by a the semi-circular earrings and nose ornaments I saw at the exhibition, which left me in awe not only of their skill but also of their ability to wear an enormous weight of metal! The shawl is worked from the curved neckline outward and alternates zig-zag and circle patterns in imitation of the pierced metalwork of the gold ornaments.

Design Inspiration and Project Overview
The Eldorado Shawl is an intermediate-level knitting pattern inspired by the Beyond El Dorado exhibition at the British Museum, which showcased gold artefacts and metalwork from ancient South American civilizations in collaboration with the Museo del Oro in Bogota, Colombia. This downloadable PDF pattern draws design elements from semi-circular earrings and nose ornaments featured in the exhibition, translating the intricate pierced metalwork aesthetic into knitted textile form.
Construction Technique
The Eldorado Shawl is constructed using a top-down approach, worked from the curved neckline outward. This method allows the shawl to expand gradually from the neck opening, creating a comfortable fit while building the garment in a logical progression. The top-down construction is particularly well-suited to shawl designs as it enables knitters to customize the final size by continuing to work additional pattern repeats until reaching desired dimensions.
Stitch Patterns and Motifs
The pattern features alternating zig-zag and circle motifs that echo the geometric designs found in the ancient metalwork pieces. These contrasting pattern sequences create visual interest and movement throughout the shawl. The pattern employs specialized decreasing techniques, including the centred double decrease (cdd), which is a foundational stitch used to shape and structure the geometric elements. This decrease technique involves slipping stitches in a specific manner to create centered, decorative decreases that are essential to achieving the pattern's distinctive appearance.
Yarn and Needle Requirements
The Eldorado Shawl is designed to be worked in 4-ply or fingering weight yarn, specifically using one 100g skein of Malabrigo Sock yarn, which provides approximately 402 metres or 440 yards of yardage. The pattern calls for 3.5mm (US 4) circular needles measuring at least 80 centimetres (32 inches) in length. The use of circular needles accommodates the shawl's expanding circumference as stitches increase from the neckline outward, and the longer needle length ensures adequate stitch capacity as the project grows.
Yarn Weight Specifications
This pattern is compatible with both 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, offering flexibility for knitters working with different yarn specifications. The fingering and 4-ply weight classifications ensure that the delicate stitch definition required for the zig-zag and circle patterns remains visible and crisp throughout the finished shawl.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate-level project, the Eldorado Shawl is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with more complex stitch patterns and shaping techniques. The pattern requires competency with circular needle techniques, understanding of decreases, and the ability to follow multi-row pattern repeats while maintaining stitch counts and pattern alignment.
