Product Description

Easy Chunky Wool Cowl - This is a very easy cowl pattern, suitable for an absolute beginner.

Shown in the Blue Sky Alpacas Bulky

There is a formula in the pattern, how to recalculate for any kind of yarn, be it bulky or not. Bear in mind, however, that the cowl might not stand straight up with soft yarn, without certain bulk and heaviness. Keep two strands of wasted yarn together for the same effect.

Have fun ! Dana

p.s. I used to work as a journalist for a short period of time, throwing knits on my cute interviewees - this is Chris Taylor from Grizzly Bear.

Easy Chunky Cowl Knitting Pattern

What Is Being Made

The Easy Chunky Cowl is a beginner-friendly snood-style cowl designed by Dana Kikic Nemmert. This project creates a cozy, tubular neckwear piece that is knitted in a simple garter stitch construction and seamed into a continuous loop. The cowl is worked in super bulky yarn, making it a quick and satisfying project suitable for knitters new to the craft.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern requires approximately 200 meters of super bulky yarn, which typically translates to around 40 to 50 meters per 100 grams of yarn weight. The example shown uses Bulky by Blue Sky Fibers, a natural fiber blend consisting of 50% alpaca and 50% wool, with each 100-gram skein yielding approximately 45 yards. The project also requires 15mm (US size 19) knitting needles, a darning needle or blunt-end tapestry needle for finishing, and basic sewing supplies for seaming.

Gauge and Finished Dimensions

The pattern is worked at a gauge of approximately 7 to 7.5 stitches and 12 to 13 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches) when measured in garter stitch. The cowl measures 55 centimeters in length before being seamed, requiring approximately 70 to 72 rows of knitting to achieve this dimension.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches Used

This beginner project utilizes fundamental knitting skills and stitches:

  • Garter Stitch: The entire cowl is worked exclusively in garter stitch, which is created by knitting every row. This stitch produces a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges and is ideal for beginners because it requires only one basic stitch throughout the entire project.
  • Cast On: The pattern begins with casting on 35 stitches using the needles and yarn.
  • Knit Stitch: All rows are worked using the basic knit stitch, maintaining consistent tension and stitch formation across the 70 to 72 rows.
  • Bind Off: Once the desired length is achieved, stitches are bound off to secure the final row and prevent unraveling.
  • Seaming: The cast-on edge and bind-off edge are sewn together using the darning needle and yarn, transforming the flat rectangular piece into a continuous circular cowl.

Skill Level and Construction

Designed for beginners, the Easy Chunky Cowl requires only basic knitting knowledge. The skills needed include casting on, executing the knit stitch, binding off, and basic seaming techniques. The use of super bulky yarn and large needles creates an open, forgiving fabric that is easier to work with than finer yarns, making mistakes less noticeable and corrections simpler. The straightforward garter stitch pattern eliminates the need to follow complex stitch patterns or manage increases and decreases, allowing new knitters to focus on developing consistent tension and fundamental technique.

Pattern Summary

Cast on 35 stitches and work in garter stitch for 55 centimeters, which equates to approximately 70 to 72 rows. Bind off all stitches, then seam the cast-on and bind-off edges together to form the finished cowl. The resulting piece is a warm, textured neckwear accessory that showcases the natural beauty of the super bulky yarn.
