Easy Abiko Cable Lace Shawl by Linda Lehman

What Is Being Made

The Abiko Cable Lace Shawl is a wearable triangular wrap designed by Linda Lehman, featuring a distinctive Japanese cable lace stitch pattern. The finished shawl measures approximately 22½ inches by 72 inches, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a traditional shawl. The design showcases a single unique cable lace pattern that creates a sophisticated, handcrafted appearance despite its accessible construction method.

Knitting Techniques Used

This shawl employs cable knitting and lace knitting techniques to create its signature aesthetic. The pattern features a Japanese-inspired cable lace stitch that serves as the focal point of the design. While the finished piece appears to be an expert-level creation, the construction is manageable for knitters with intermediate-level experience, particularly those already familiar with cable work and lace knitting fundamentals. The pattern requires understanding of how cables interact with lace elements to produce the final visual effect.

Stitches and Pattern Details

The shawl utilizes a specialized cable lace stitch pattern that combines traditional cable techniques with openwork lace elements. The pattern is worked in a single, repeating stitch motif that remains consistent throughout the main body of the wrap. Knitters will need to be comfortable reading lace charts and executing cable crosses to successfully complete this project. The pattern includes an edging component that is worked separately using crochet techniques, adding a finished border to the shawlette.

Materials and Tools Required

For the Main Shawl Body:

  • 950 to 1100 yards of fingering weight yarn (4-ply)
  • U.S. Size #6 (4.5mm) knitting needles
  • One spare U.S. Size #6 needle for binding off or stitch management
  • Cable needle for executing cable crosses
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • Row counter (optional but recommended for tracking progress)

For the Edging:

  • Approximately 100 yards of coordinating or matching yarn
  • Size H crochet hook (5mm)
  • Size I crochet hook (5.75mm)

Gauge and Finishing Information

The pattern is worked at approximately 4¾ stitches per inch when measured in the cable lace pattern stitch and aggressively blocked for lace. The designer notes that gauge is not critical for this particular garment, making it more forgiving for knitters who may struggle with precise tension. Blocking is recommended to open up the lace elements and showcase the intricate stitch definition of the cable pattern.

Skill Level and Suitability

While the pattern is labeled as beginner-friendly in terms of overall construction, it is most appropriately suited for intermediate knitters who have prior experience with lace knitting and cable techniques. The design is perfect for knitters seeking a project that delivers impressive visual results without requiring advanced shaping or complex stitch manipulation. This shawl makes an excellent gift project or personal indulgence for someone looking to expand their cable and lace knitting skills.
