Product Description

These Bunnies are stiffened with a simple mix of white sugar and water.

This allows the Bunny to stand up and is hollow to pop in chocolate treats.

Any size yarn and crochet hook will be ok as size is unimportant.

I used acrylic yarn but cotton yarn would work too.

Easter Bunnies for Treats by Leanna's Designs

Project Overview

Easter Bunnies for Treats is a crochet toy pattern designed by Leanna Booth in January 2021. These decorative bunnies are functional treat holders, designed to open and reveal hidden chocolate eggs or other small treats inside. The design is inspired by traditional shop-bought standing chocolate Easter bunnies, making them charming handmade alternatives for Easter celebrations and gift-giving.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a standing Easter bunny toy with a removable head that functions as a treat cavity. The bunny body is constructed to hold its shape when filled with treats, and the head flips over to conceal the hidden contents. The finished toy captures the classic appearance of solid chocolate Easter bunnies while offering an interactive, fillable design suitable for children and adults alike.

Crochet Techniques Used

The pattern employs fundamental crochet construction techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The bunny body is created using circular crochet, beginning with a chain foundation worked into a ring using slip stitch. The pattern utilizes increases and decreases to shape the three-dimensional form, creating the characteristic rounded body and head structure. Stiffening techniques are incorporated into the construction process to maintain the bunny's standing posture and structural integrity when treats are inserted.

Stitches Used

  • Double Crochet (dc) – forms the primary fabric of the bunny body
  • Single Crochet (sc) – used for shaping and detail work
  • Treble (tr) – employed for specific stitch variations
  • Half Treble (htr) – contributes to fabric texture and shaping
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc) – used in construction details
  • Slip Stitch (ss) – joins rounds and creates seamless transitions
  • Decreases (dec) – shapes the bunny's contours and reduces stitch counts

Materials and Specifications

Yarn: The pattern calls for 1 ball of 8-ply (DK weight) yarn in 50g, available in any color of your choice for the main bunny body. DK weight yarn provides an appropriate fabric weight for creating a sturdy, well-defined toy that maintains its shape.

Hook: A 3.5mm crochet hook (UK size 9, US size E/4) is used throughout the pattern to work with the DK weight yarn, creating a tight, durable fabric suitable for a toy that will be handled and filled with treats.

Additional Materials: Polyester stuffing fills the bunny body and head. A stiffening solution made from 3 tablespoons of white sugar mixed with 3-4 tablespoons of water (sufficient for approximately 3 bunnies) is applied to the body to create structure and rigidity. Small amounts of matching ribbon are used to tie the head and body closed, securing the treat cavity. Safety features include 2 x 8mm safety eyes, or embroidered eyes are recommended for toys intended for children under 3 years old.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle shaping techniques, three-dimensional construction, and the incorporation of stiffening methods. The pattern requires understanding of how to increase and decrease stitches to create the bunny's rounded form and familiarity with working in the round.
