Product Description
PDF pattern to make these cute and colorful easter bird’s nests. This is a very detailed pattern with every technique explained, it includes images and a link to an additional video on my YouTube channel (Iris Nikolopoulou).
The yarn I used is DK and 100%acrylic. You will need a crochet hook 3mm / 11 (UK)/ -(US), also a tapestry needle and scissors. To decorate / fill the nests I used fake straw, decorative mini eggs and a mini chick.
Easter Bird's Nest Crochet Decoration
What Is Being Made
The Easter Bird's Nest is a small decorative crochet project designed by Iris Nikolopoulou. This finished piece measures approximately 6 cm in diameter (1 3/8 inches), making it an ideal size for Easter decorations, table settings, or craft displays. The project creates a textured nest-like structure suitable for intermediate-level crocheters.
Craft and Primary Technique
This design is created entirely using crochet techniques. The project is classified as intermediate difficulty, requiring foundational crochet skills and familiarity with working in the round. The construction method involves building the nest structure from the center outward using circular increases, a common approach for creating dimensional, bowl-like forms in crochet.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Easter Bird's Nest pattern employs several essential crochet stitches and techniques:
- Magic Ring (mr) – Used to start the project with a closed center loop, allowing for seamless circular construction
- Single Crochet (sc) – The primary stitch used throughout the pattern for building the nest structure
- Half Double Crochet (hdc) – Provides additional height and texture variation in the design
- Slip Stitch (sl st) – Used to join rounds and create a finished edge
- Front Post (fp) – Creates texture by working around the post of stitches from previous rows
- Back Post (bp) – Adds dimensional detail by working behind the post of stitches
The pattern uses strategic stitch increases (sc 2 in 1 st) to shape the nest, expanding from 6 stitches in Round 1 to 24 stitches by Round 4, creating the characteristic curved form.
Materials and Tools
The Easter Bird's Nest is designed to be worked with DK weight yarn, specifically Petalouda brand, which is composed of 100% acrylic fiber. Each skein provides 50 grams (1.76 ounces) and approximately 133 meters (145 yards) of yarn—more than sufficient for this small decorative project.
The recommended hook size is 3 mm (UK size 11), with an alternative range of 3.5–4.5 mm hooks available depending on personal gauge preference. The pattern specifies a gauge of 21 stitches by 26 rows, which helps achieve the correct finished dimensions. Additional materials needed include scissors and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.
