What is Being Made

The Duncrievie Beanie is a warm, woolly knitted hat designed to fit head sizes between 20 and 23 inches. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a double-thickness beanie through stranded colorwork techniques, providing extra warmth and insulation ideal for cold weather wear.

Knitting Techniques Used

This beanie is constructed using stranded knitting, a colorwork method that creates a double layer of fabric by carrying unused yarn colors across the back of the work. This technique not only produces the decorative patterned surface but also adds significant warmth and durability to the finished hat. The pattern is worked in the round using either double-pointed needles or a circular needle, which is the standard method for creating seamless tubular garments like beanies and hats.

Stitches and Construction Details

The Duncrievie Beanie employs fundamental knitting stitches combined with shaping techniques:

  • Knit (K) and Purl (P) stitches form the basic fabric structure
  • Make 1 (M1) increases are used to add stitches by picking up the loop between stitches and knitting into the back of the loop, allowing for gradual shaping
  • S2, K1, PSSO (slip 2 stitches knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitches over) decreases are employed to shape the crown of the hat
  • Ribbed cuff worked on smaller needles to create an elastic, fitted edge that hugs the head

Yarn and Materials

This pattern uses Jamieson's of Shetland Spindrift, a 4-ply weight yarn, with 25g each of four colors: White, Light Grey, Mid Grey, and Black. The 4-ply weight provides excellent stitch definition for colorwork patterns while maintaining reasonable knitting speed. Shetland wool is renowned for its warmth, durability, and traditional heritage in Fair Isle and stranded knitting techniques.

Needles and Gauge

The pattern requires 3.00mm double-pointed or circular needles for working the ribbed cuff and 3.25mm double-pointed or circular needles for the main body. The gauge is 32 rows by 30 stitches per 4 inches (10 cm) on 3.25mm needles after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished hat size and ensuring the stranded colorwork sits properly without puckering.

Additional Notions

Beyond yarn and needles, the pattern requires a stitch marker to track the beginning of each round during in-the-round knitting, a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, and scissors for finishing.
