Dream Catcher Blanket by Susan B. Anderson – Free Knitting Pattern in Spud & Chloë Sweater Yarn

The Dream Catcher Blanket is a free, beginner-friendly knitting pattern designed by Susan B. Anderson and published by Spud & Chloë. This cheerful, colorful patchwork blanket is constructed by knitting individual squares in a variety of stitch patterns and colorways, then assembling them into a finished throw measuring approximately 29 inches by 32½ inches. The modular, square-by-square construction makes this an ideal project for knitters who are just building their skills, as each small square is a manageable and satisfying unit of work before the pieces are joined into a cohesive whole.

What Is Being Made

The finished project is a knitted patchwork blanket or throw made up of multiple individual squares, each worked in a different stitch pattern and/or color. The squares are knitted flat and then seamed together to create the final blanket. The design uses five distinct yarn colorways to create a vibrant, playful palette well suited to children's rooms or as a cozy lap throw.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for Spud & Chloë Sweater yarn, a worsted-to-aran weight yarn with a fiber composition of 55% superwash wool and 45% organic cotton. Each skein contains 100 grams and approximately 160 yards. The pattern requires 2 skeins each of the following five colorways:

  • Pollen #7508
  • Grass #7502
  • Splash #7510
  • Firefly #7505
  • Watermelon #7512

The superwash wool content makes the finished blanket easy to care for, while the organic cotton adds softness and breathability — practical qualities for a blanket intended for everyday use. Knitting needles in US size 7 are used throughout the pattern.

Square Construction and Stitch Patterns

Each individual square is cast on with 32 stitches and worked flat until it measures 6¼ inches from the cast-on edge. Consistent square sizing is emphasized throughout the pattern so that the finished pieces seam together neatly. A total of 5 squares per colorway are worked, with different stitch patterns assigned to different color groups.

Harris Tweed Square (worked in Pollen)

The Harris Tweed Square is worked in the Pollen colorway and uses a structured 8-row repeat that alternates between ribbing and stockinette-style rows. Five of these squares are made. The stitch sequence is as follows:

  • Rows 1 and 2: A k2, p2 rib repeat across the row
  • Row 3: Knit (right side)
  • Row 4: Purl (wrong side)
  • Rows 5 and 6: A k2, p2 rib repeat across the row
  • Row 7: Purl
  • Row 8: Knit

This 8-row repeat creates a textured, tweed-like surface with alternating bands of ribbing and reverse stockinette, giving the squares visual interest and a slightly structured drape. The knitter is instructed to stop on any row as long as all five squares end on the same row for consistency.

Grass Squares – Three Stitch Pattern Options

Five squares are worked in the Grass #7502 colorway, and the designer offers three different stitch pattern choices for these squares, allowing for creative flexibility. All three stitch patterns are referenced as being found in the book Super Stitches Knitting by Karen Hemingway. In the sample blanket, Susan B. Anderson used 3 Andalusian Stitch squares and 2 Pennant Stitch squares, though knitters may mix and match as they prefer
