Double Waffle Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern

What is Being Made

The Double Waffle Baby Blanket is a square crochet blanket designed by Olga Vogel of My Crochet Space. This finished project measures 23.5 inches by 23.5 inches (60cm x 60cm), making it an ideal size for a baby blanket. The blanket features a textured waffle pattern created through strategic use of post stitches, resulting in a dimensional, cushioned fabric that is both visually interesting and tactilely appealing for infants and young children.

Techniques Used

This crochet blanket employs fundamental techniques suitable for advanced beginners. The blanket is constructed by working in back and forth rows, which creates a flat, rectangular foundation that is then built upon with texture. The primary technique featured in this pattern is the use of front post double crochet stitches (FPDC), which are worked around the post of stitches from previous rows rather than into the top loops. This post stitch technique is what creates the distinctive waffle texture characteristic of this design. The pattern allows for customization of the finished size by adjusting the foundation chain length in multiples of four, plus four additional chains, and by working additional or fewer rows as desired.

Stitches Used

The Double Waffle Baby Blanket pattern utilizes the following crochet stitches:

  • Chain stitch (Ch) – used for the foundation and throughout the pattern
  • Double crochet (DC) – the primary stitch that forms the base of each row
  • Front post double crochet (FPDC) – the signature stitch that creates the waffle texture by working around the post of previous stitches

The pattern notes that the chain 2 (Ch2) at the beginning of each row counts as the first stitch, which is a standard convention in crochet patterns that helps maintain consistent stitch counts throughout the project.

Materials and Tools

This pattern calls for light weight yarn, classified as #3. The designer used Stallion by 4 Seasons in 8ply weight, which is 100% acrylic fiber. Each skein contains 100 grams or 3.53 ounces with 230 meters (252 yards) of yardage. For this blanket, 3 skeins of yarn are required, providing approximately 690 meters or 756 yards total. The sample shown was worked in Pale Pink, though any light weight yarn in this category would be suitable for the pattern.

A 4.5mm crochet hook (size 7) is recommended for this project. Additional materials include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and scissors for cutting yarn. The gauge for this pattern is 17 stitches by 12 rows measured over 4 inches (10cm) of finished fabric, which helps ensure the blanket reaches the intended finished dimensions.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as Easy with an advanced beginner skill level. While the techniques are relatively straightforward, the use of front post double crochet stitches requires some familiarity with post stitch construction, making it ideal for crocheters who have completed several basic projects and are ready to explore textured stitch techniques. The repetitive nature of the pattern and the simple construction method (back and forth rows) make it accessible to those developing their crochet skills.
