Doll's Butterfly Bed by Susan J Ward

Project Overview

The Doll's Butterfly Bed is an intermediate-level knitting project designed to create a complete miniature bed set for dolls, measuring approximately 22 by 15 inches (56 by 38 centimeters). This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Susan J Ward provides instructions for constructing a functional doll bed featuring a mattress, pillow, blanket, headboard, and side panel. The project combines multiple knitting techniques and yarn weights to achieve a realistic, proportionate bedroom accessory suitable for collectors and crafters seeking to furnish doll houses or display pieces.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a complete doll bed ensemble consisting of five distinct components:

  • A mattress with internal stuffing
  • A coordinating pillow
  • A decorative blanket measuring approximately 11 by 14 inches (28 by 36 centimeters)
  • A headboard
  • A side panel

The bed is constructed on a strong cardboard base for stability and durability. Optional decorative elements include lace trim and assorted beads to personalize the finished piece.

Materials Required

This project utilizes multiple yarn weights and needle sizes to create varied textures and structural integrity across the different bed components:

  • Needles: One pair each of 5mm, 6mm, and 6.5mm needles
  • Yarn for Blanket: 100 grams of double knit (DK) yarn
  • Yarn for Mattress: 150 grams of Aran weight yarn
  • Yarn for Headboard: 150 grams of Aran weight yarn
  • Yarn for Side Panel: 25 grams of Aran weight yarn
  • Stuffing: Half a meter of flame retardant wadding or toy stuffing for the mattress and pillow
  • Base: A piece of strong cardboard for structural support
  • Optional Embellishments: Lace for decoration and assorted beads

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Doll's Butterfly Bed pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to construct the various components. The blanket, worked on 5mm needles using double knit yarn, features a decorative stitch pattern that creates texture and visual interest.

Core Stitches Used:

  • Knit (K): The basic knit stitch forms the foundation of most components
  • Purl (P): Purl stitches are combined with knit stitches to create texture and pattern definition
  • Purl Three Together (P3 tog): A decrease technique that reduces stitch count and creates shaping
  • Knit, Purl, Knit All in One Stitch (K1 P1 K1): An increase technique that expands stitches within a single stitch, creating decorative lace-like effects and the butterfly motif characteristic of the bed design
  • Yarn Forward (YFD): A yarn-over technique that creates openwork and lace effects
  • Slip Stitch (SL): Used for various shaping and joining techniques
  • Pass Slipped Stitch Over (PSSO): A decrease method that creates clean, directional shaping

Pattern Construction: The blanket is created using a four-row repeat pattern that alternates between increase and decrease rows. Row 1 and Row 3 feature the alternating (K1 P1 K1) increase and P3 tog decrease stitches, while Rows 2 and 4 consist of purl stitches. This creates a reversible, textured pattern suitable for a miniature bed covering. The pattern repeats multiple times to achieve the desired finished dimensions.

Difficulty Level

Classified as an intermediate project, the Doll's Butterfly Bed requires knitters to have foundational skills including casting on, basic stitch work, and familiarity with increase and decrease techniques. The combination of multiple yarn weights, needle sizes, and the coordination of several separate components—each requiring assembly—makes this project suitable for crafters with
