Product Description
This is a knitting pattern for a baby blanket with an embossed diamond design. It’s knit up using a really simple pattern that repeats, and you can change the colors however you want. You can also make this super easy baby blanket in different sizes and customize it however you like! After knitting the blanket, I added a fleece lining to make the blanket even more snuggly and a satin ribbon to finish it off. These make for great baby shower gifts!
Dina Baby Blanket by Shehla Ahmed
What is Being Made
The Dina Baby Blanket is a knitted throw blanket designed by independent designer Shehla Ahmed. This project creates a finished blanket measuring approximately 30 inches, making it an ideal size for a baby blanket or small throw. The blanket is constructed using a repeating pattern that can be customized in size by adjusting the number of pattern repeats.
Techniques Used
This blanket employs fundamental knitting techniques with an emphasis on stitch precision and pattern alignment. The primary technique involves creating embossed diamond motifs through strategic placement of purl stitches against a knit background. The designer emphasizes the importance of careful stitch counting and attention to detail, as misplaced purl stitches will disrupt the visual diamond pattern. The blanket is worked flat in rows from a cast-on edge, allowing crafters to work at their own pace and easily track progress through the repeating row sequence.
Stitches Used
The Dina Baby Blanket utilizes basic knitting stitches to achieve its textured design:
- Knit stitch (K) – Forms the smooth background and creates the diamond shapes through contrast
- Purl stitch (P) – Creates the embossed diamond texture and outlines when worked in specific sequences
- Cast-on – Used to establish the initial 145 stitches (or any multiple of 8 plus 1 stitch)
The pattern repeats across 6 rows before the sequence continues, with each row containing a specific combination of knit and purl stitches that build the overall diamond motif. The blanket's structure relies on maintaining consistent stitch counts throughout, with the pattern repeating 18 times across the width to achieve the 30-inch finished size.
Materials
This intermediate-level knitting project is worked in worsted weight yarn, which provides good stitch definition for showcasing the embossed diamond texture. Worsted weight yarn is forgiving for intermediate knitters and works up at a moderate pace, making this blanket an achievable project. Appropriate knitting needles sized for worsted weight yarn are required, though the pattern does not specify exact needle size, allowing crafters to choose needles that produce their desired fabric density and drape.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, the Dina Baby Blanket is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with stitch patterns. The primary challenge lies not in complex techniques but in maintaining pattern accuracy across many rows and stitches. Success requires careful attention to stitch placement, regular stitch counting, and the ability to read and follow a written row-by-row pattern.
