Diamond Shawl by Vera and Bess

Project Overview

The Diamond Shawl, also known as Lacy In The Sky With Diamonds, is a crocheted wrap and scarf designed by Vera and Bess (Vicky Gorry). This intermediate-level crochet project creates an elegant, lacy accessory perfect for adding a delicate layer to any wardrobe. The design combines classic diamond motifs worked in individual rounds and joined together to form a larger, cohesive wrap.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a wrap and scarf hybrid garment constructed from multiple crocheted diamond motifs. The individual diamond shapes are arranged in rows and joined together during the final round of each motif, creating a lightweight, breathable fabric with an open, lacy aesthetic. The finished piece offers versatility as both a shoulder wrap and a neck scarf, making it suitable for various occasions and seasons.

Construction Technique

The Diamond Shawl is made using a modular construction method. Individual diamond motifs are crocheted in rounds, working from the center outward on the right side. Each single diamond motif measures approximately 13 by 11.5 centimeters (5 by 4.5 inches) when worked with a 3.5mm crochet hook. The motifs are organized and joined in rows of 4 during the final round of each motif, allowing the diamonds to connect seamlessly and form the overall wrap structure. This modular approach makes the project manageable and allows crafters to track progress through each completed motif.

Stitches Used

The pattern employs several fundamental crochet stitches to create the diamond texture and lacy appearance:

  • Chain stitch (ch) — forms the foundation and creates openwork sections
  • Slip stitch (ss) — joins rounds and connects motifs
  • Double crochet (dc) — builds structure and density in specific areas
  • Treble crochet (tr) — creates taller stitches for the diamond's characteristic shape
  • Double treble crochet (dtr) — produces extra height for dramatic diamond points
  • Front post double crochet (FPdc) — adds textural dimension by working around post stitches
  • Front post treble crochet (FPtr) — creates raised, dimensional details

The combination of these stitches at varying heights produces the distinctive diamond silhouette and the open, airy lacework characteristic of the design.

Materials and Tools

Crochet Hook: A 3.5mm (UK size) or E/4 (US size) crochet hook is used throughout the project. Achieving an exact gauge match is not critical; however, crafters should work neat chain stitches with their chosen hook and maintain consistent tension so that each diamond motif remains uniform in size.

Yarn: The pattern specifies Lana Grossa Summer Lace, a lace-weight yarn composed of 97% cotton and 3% polyester. Four balls of the Mint (103) colorway are required, with each ball containing 50 grams and 195 meters of yardage. The pattern notes that any 4-ply yarn with softness and drape characteristics can be substituted, allowing crafters flexibility in fiber choice while maintaining the intended aesthetic and drape of the finished wrap.

Additional Supplies: A darning needle is needed for weaving in yarn ends and finishing the project.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to work with multiple stitch types and manage a modular, multi-motif construction. Familiarity with basic crochet stitches and the ability to read pattern abbreviations and instructions is expected.

Gauge and Sizing Notes

Each individual diamond motif measures 13 by 11.5 centimeters (5 by 4.5 inches) when worked with the recommended 3.5mm hook. The pattern emphasizes that exact gauge matching is less important than maintaining neat, consistent stitchwork and even tension throughout the project. This flexibility allows crafters of varying skill levels to complete the wrap successfully while ensuring all motifs are proportionally similar in size.
