Desmond Colorwork Hat by SoWhyNot Designs
What Is Being Made
Desmond is a slightly slouchy knitted hat designed by Laura Olsavsky of SoWhyNot Designs. Inspired by the jazz standard "Take Five" by Paul Desmond, this hat celebrates the number five through its use of five contrasting colors and patterns. The design comes in three sizes: Adult Small, Medium, and Large, with finished head circumferences of 20, 21, and 23 inches (51, 56, and 61 centimeters) respectively. The hat stands approximately 9¼ to 9¾ inches (24 to 25 centimeters) tall, making it a versatile accessory for adding visual interest to any wardrobe.
Techniques and Approach
Desmond is an excellent introduction to stranded colorwork knitting, featuring an easily memorized color pattern that alternates between multi-color rows and restful one-color rows. This strategic pacing makes the project challenging yet relaxing, preventing the fatigue that can come from continuous colorwork. The pattern is designed as a companion piece to the Brubeck cowl, allowing knitters to create a coordinated set.
The hat offers flexibility in finishing options, with two distinct hat band choices: a fold-over band for a more polished look, or plain ribbing for a classic finish. Both charted and written instructions are provided, accommodating different learning preferences and allowing knitters to follow whichever format they find most intuitive.
Stitches Used
- Stranded colorwork (also called Fair Isle knitting) for the main patterned sections
- Ribbing for the hat band options
Materials Required
This pattern is specifically designed for fingering weight yarn (also known as 4-ply yarn). The recommended yarn is Lorna's Laces String Quintet, a collection of five coordinating mini-skeins that provides the five contrast colors. Knitters will need approximately 130 to 150 yards (120 to 140 meters) of main color yarn, plus 25 yards (23 meters) each of five different contrast colors. The downloadable PDF pattern includes guidance on yarn selection and substitution options to help knitters choose complementary colors and weights for their own versions of this colorful hat.
