Product Description
The cabled pattern of this blanket looks like waves or ripples of the "deep blue" sea. There are two different twist rows to keep it interesting and the other rows are quite repetitive, so it is easy to work.
You may use yarn and hook of choice and make this blanket to any dimensions. Sample blanket was made using a sport weight (5ply or size 2) yarn and crochet hook size H (5.0 mm). Sample finished size was approx. 30" x 36".

Deep Blue Cable Blanket by Lisa van Klaveren
Project Overview
The Deep Blue Cable Blanket is a crocheted throw designed by independent designer Lisa van Klaveren. This intermediate-level project creates a textured blanket featuring prominent cable patterns worked in sport weight yarn. The sample blanket measures approximately 30" x 36", though crafters can customize the finished size to their preference.
What Is Being Made
This is a crochet blanket featuring decorative cable twists as the primary design element. The blanket uses a combination of front post double crochet stitches and single crochet stitches to create dimensional, rope-like cable textures across the fabric. The construction maintains consistent stitch counts throughout, with no increases or decreases—only strategic stitch placement shifts that produce the cabled appearance.
Crochet Techniques Used
- Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc): The foundation technique for creating the cable effect. These stitches are worked around the posts of double crochet stitches from 2 rows below, rather than into the previous row, which creates the dimensional texture.
- Cable Twist Stitch: A special stitch technique that intertwines fpdc stitches to form authentic-looking cable patterns. The cable twist involves skipping stitches, working fpdc around specific posts 2 rows below, and anchoring the twist with single crochet to maintain structural integrity.
- Gauge Flexibility: Crafters may work to their own gauge, allowing customization of the final blanket dimensions based on personal preference and yarn characteristics.
Stitches Used
- Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc)
- Double Crochet (dc)
- Single Crochet (sc)
- Cable Twist (special stitch combining the above techniques)
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: Sport weight yarn in the color of choice, requiring approximately 1500 yards for the sample blanket size. Sport weight yarn provides a lightweight, drapable fabric suitable for throws and blankets.
Hook: Size H crochet hook (5.0 mm)
Finished Dimensions: Customizable; sample measures approximately 30" x 36"
Pattern Construction Notes
The pattern employs a systematic approach to cable creation. All fpdc stitches are consistently worked around the posts of double crochet stitches located 2 rows below, rather than on the immediately preceding row. This technique creates the characteristic raised, twisted appearance of cables.
Stitch count remains constant throughout the entire project—there is no increasing or decreasing. Instead, the cable pattern emerges through the strategic shifting of single crochet and fpdc stitch placement from row to row. This makes the pattern suitable for intermediate crocheters who understand basic stitch construction and post-stitch techniques.
Difficulty Level
Listed as Skill Level 1 (intermediate), this project is appropriate for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to explore textured stitch techniques and post-based stitching. Understanding front post stitches and the ability to work consistently across multiple rows is essential for success.
