Product Description
From the 18th to 20th centuries, Danish women wore these knitted "night shirts" (Nattrøjer) as part of their daily dress. Although many variations were created, the sweaters usually contained some of the following construction details: split welts worked in a knit/purl checkerboard motif, underarm half-gussets, square necklines.
Note that the yardage of the Wendy Guernsey would lead you to believe this calls for a DK weight yarn but the Guernsey yarn specs (and the sweater gauge) are for fingering weight. calls for 6-9 100g balls at 246 yds each.
Danish Nattrøjer by Beth Brown-Reinsel
What is Being Made
The Danish Nattrøjer is a cropped pullover sweater inspired by historical everyday wear for Danish women in the 1800s. These garments were traditionally worn as undershirts and feature distinctive construction techniques that were characteristic of Scandinavian knitwear. The design offers multiple sizes to accommodate different measurements and preferences.
Construction and Techniques
This knitting pattern employs several advanced construction methods that define the Nattrøjer design:
- Overlapped Split Welts: The welts are created using a checkerboard design and are knitted back and forth before being joined circularly. These welts can be worked in half-vertical repeat increments, allowing for length adjustments of 2.5 inches as needed.
- Underarm Half-Gusset: An optional underarm gusset is included in the pattern, requiring an extra 1 to 2 balls of yarn. This construction detail adds comfort and improved fit in the underarm area.
- Three-Needle Bind-off: The pattern utilizes the three-needle bind-off technique for finishing, a method that creates a strong, flexible seam.
- Circular Knitting: After the initial welts are completed, the body is knitted in the round, which is a hallmark of traditional Scandinavian sweater construction.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern features a checkerboard welt design that provides visual interest and structural integrity. The body construction relies on fundamental knitting stitches worked in the round, with the gauge specified at 7 stitches and 11.25 rows per inch.
Yarn and Materials
The Danish Nattrøjer is designed for 4-ply weight yarn, specifically Guernsey or other firmly twisted sport weight or fingering weight wool yarn with a yardage of 246 yards per 100 grams. Yardage requirements vary by size: 1475 yards for the smallest size (6), 1725 yards for size 7, 1975 yards for size 8, and 2225 yards for size 9.
Needles required include Size 1 (2.25 mm) needles in multiple lengths: 16 inches (40 cm), 24 inches (60 cm), and 32 inches (80 cm), as well as double-pointed needles. Needle size may be adjusted as necessary to achieve the correct gauge for your yarn.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable working with circular needles, managing multiple needle sizes, and executing construction techniques such as the three-needle bind-off and gusset shaping.
